Paper rounds as a Kid

I used to do a paper round six mornings a week, started when I was 13 (1980). I got paid £2 a week. When I gave it up 3 years later it had risen to a massive £2.40 a week.
I also used to sell the evening paper to the workers as they came out of the factory down the road, that used to earn me another £1.20 a week.
Happy days!!!

shauncr91 you got a homebase focus morisons asdas or argos near by there your best bet. 2 weeks before my 16th birthday i applied for homebase i got then leftthere to work in a builders merchants moved to another then a saw mill now here ive never been out of work in 5 years i was working while at school didnt have any effect on me.

i suppose we cant tarr them with the same brush (hope that aint racist it sure sounds it) there are a few out there trying. its better to try and fail than not try at all

I did a paper round when I was 14 for a couple of years before getting a weekend job. I think the low pay helped me to learn to live within my means.

When they had Peter Jones (? - the tall one off dragons den) on top gear he talked about funding his kids and he had what I thought was a great idea. He said he'd set up trust funds for his kids that only pays them the same as they are earning, or double if its an important public service job, such as a nurse or something. To me thats a great way to prevent the next Paris Hilton, and I guess you could scale it down for this situation too.

PK!

It's the free local paper that is rubbish as there are loads of them and you got paid a pittance.

When I was 14-16 I did a few daily paper rounds in my village and got a decent amount that was good for buying an ice cream after footy in the week or saving up for something.

I remember that I they never told what time to deliver so one Saturday I didn't bother getting up early to go out and got a phone call saying people were wondering where their papers were! :o

Used to do a Sunday paper round, was about 40 papers, all heavy sunday ones. Took me about an hour and a half on a sunday morning and I made about £20, took in a good half a dozen streets too.

I didn't bother getting a paper round when i was 15, from what i heard, it paid naff all.
Got a job on a weekend instead paying twice as much.

I had one at the age of 13/14 for two weeks. Lets just say the corner shop owner duped me when I took the job.

He told me when I was used to doing the round, it would take approximatley 35-40mins on the morning run, and 25-30 on the afternoon.

After two weeks of doing it twice a day, the morning one still took me 1hr 15mins and the afternoon one took me 1hr. The weekend one was an extra half hour because of the size of the papers and I had to go back to refill the bag.

There was no chance in doing it in the time he originally suggested, some of the damn flats I had to deliver too were 20 stories high!

Weekly pay...£14.

I was getting shafted and my parents made me quit because I was falling asleep in school and social time, they paid me the £14 instead.

I had a morning one, as did most my friends at school. I think it was about 17 papers a day and i got £7 a week. The best part was christman when i used to post cards aswell. I think my best year i got £28 in tips :D

That was exactly how mines was but did it 7 days a week, i had a round that you couldnt take a bike you were always on and off so often pluss had to take a bouble bag. on a sunday it was a double bag and a double run ahhh

Tell the lazy sod he's going to get up off his **** and do a paper round or he's getting nothing more from you other than a clout round the ear.

I did a paper round when I was 14/15, 400 link magazines a month + leaflets, £12-15 depnding on leaflets, not much but it paid. Took about 3 hours sometimes. Spent to money on tapes and of course we did a little bit of drinking and smoking back then, I think most people did our age.
Not like I got pocket money or anything so I had to do something.

I did one when I was 14 every morning, half an hours work and £18 a week. Only problem was I hated getting up at 6:30 :p

the problem also lies that its apparently illegal for kids to be out working before 7.30. rubbish i was out at 6.30 too didnt harm me.

Well I only do about 17 papers too, most of which are on the same street. So I guess I am quite lucky with my round.

And as for the guy further up telling me to get on a builders yard on a Saturday, you obviously have absolutely no idea how hard it is to find part time work now below 18, especially in the summer holidays where almost every other student is trying to do the same. This month I have handed out around 20 CV's and about 8 application forms, so please don't try and imply that I'm not trying, because that's the feeling I got from your post.

BK/McD's will have you :)

I did one in my old village (about 100 houses spread over about a mile and a half of long road) and £16 a week for 2 hours of my thursday evening!

Hated it when it was wet and when i had to do work for school next day but after a few months i could afford new ram for my pc :D

Had to quit at 16 as we moved but my next door neighbour still does it (hes 19 now) as its jsut easy money

I did a paper round when I was 14 for 2 years. I got paid £12 for Mon - Sat, delivering about 50 papers each morning. Christmas tips were always nice :).

I did one from 13-16, right through my GCSEs. Every morning, up at 6:20, out by half past, back by quarter past 7. That was ~40 drops a day, every day, for three and a half years.

Got £14/week to start, went up to £16 when a new owner took over.

Have to say though, at first, I really was opposed to the idea, but after my first payday, when I came home with cash in my pocket, it was a real eye opener.

I only left when I got a proper part time job last September. I can't imagine not earning a living now, don't know how I'd get by.

That said, there's still a fair few of my mates without jobs. I can remember last September, everyone moaning and having a go about me working on a Saturday afternoon - but now, they're all whining because they've got no money for anything, and they can't find a job. Which is quite funny, really.

*rolls in money*

i used to do one in the morning and 2 on an evening, then on a weekend i used to walk the streets with a bucket, sponge and car shampoo knocking on doors asking if they wanted their car washing, i earnt quite a mint as a kid :D

I did a paper round when I was 14-15 for about a year. I got £12 a week, but it was a pain as my paper round consisted of steep hills. And was morning, should have seen it in winter, near death trap riding a bike down the snowy streets. I found it made me a lot fitter though. Took about 50mins, had something like 32 papers, it took long as the houses were really spread out.

I wouldn't do it now though.
