Part build - Any suggestions?

Hey all,

I've currently got a fairly old PC that I upgraded earlier in the year with a GTX 460, a new PSU to run it and Windows 7 - as this was all my finances could afford at the time.

I'm now looking to complete the upgrade; looking to spend £500-£700 on the remaining items.

I'm looking to build a PC that will last me the next 2-3 years. I'm a big fan of the BF and CoD series and also play some MMO's. Would like to play the latest evolution of these with ease as well as doing favourably a number of years into the future!

Was thinking along the lines of an i7 processor 4 gb ram, a new case to hold it, and any components that are a requirement so fans, motherboards, cooling, hard drive, cd drive etc - forgive me although I like to think of myself as competant I am fairly new to the looking inside my case and noticing what is all there bit!

Would be willing to spend more (but not much) if anyone can put together a decent argument for dual linked graphics cards / better components

Any idea's? Would it be more helpful for me to link the sort of things I was looking at in here for review/critique?

Thanks in advance for any help.

dont bother with the i7, its exactly the same as the i5 2500k for gaming.

with your budget youve probably got room for a better graphics card in there too, so you might want to sell the 460 and add that to the budget

could you also tell me if the HDD and DVD drive are IDE (massive ribbon cable) or SATA (small flat cable). if they're SATA then they can be recycled, if not then you ought to get new ones really

Thanks for the speedy response Reaper.

Not 100% certain - currently at work so would have to wait til I get home to check. From what i remember they're IDE (the massive ribbon cable bit rings a bell) - they're roughly 5 years old. I definitely had them in the PC summer of 2006 if not before.

Is the 460 good enough? I would be fairly easy about sticking with what I have for now if it is. Upgrading the graphics in a couple of years or less time doesn't worry me - I'm particularly keen to ensure I have a motherboard/cpu/hard drive/dvd drive that will last me a couple of graphics card changes going on into the future!

i'd keep the 460gtx to start with and see how it performs, maybe swap it in the future if it doesnt perform as well as you need:

might be worth going with a gen 3 mobo if you want to have pci-e 3 available.

included sata hard drive and dvd, could add the crucial m4 64gb ssd drive as well to the spec below.

I've got:

Cooler Master GX 650W '80 Plus' Power Supply.

So general consensus is that the i7 is pointless? Any point in upgrading the hard drive/RAM on that suggestion mp260767? Or will it do a job until it needs upgrading?

Thanks again all.

if you've got a sata drive then i'd use it, prices are just silly at the moment.

psu will be fine.

yeah the i7 is only really recommended if you plan to do anything that will make use of its hyper threading (usually stuff like lots of video encoding etc)

ram wise it doesnt really matter with the sandybridges, you can still overclock pretty well.

Ok guys thanks, I'll keep it in mind. I probably will buy new drives as both are getting on abit and I've definitely had a couple of issues since installing windows 7 - am keen to do a full overhaul.

Quick couple of questions.

Will I need any more fans or will the two that are supplied with the case mp260767 suggested suffice?

I understand windows 7 is linked to the motherboard its installed on, I seem to remember reading that I will be able to (relatively easily) uninstall my copy of windows 7 from the current hd/motherboard ready for a fresh install on the new hd/motherboard?

Will probably order in the next couple of days, if anyone has any more thoughts on the subject I'd really appreciate the input and thanks very much for your help so far.
