I was wondering what is the best way of applying for a part time job in a computer shop, such as PC World or some smaller less well known shop in my local town? I just want to work at the weekend.

Should I phone them or E-Mail them, and if so what should I say/ right so I might have a chance of working there. I've got a list of 6 different shops so far. Do any of you work in a pc shop and if so what would you think is the best way of applying to work there? I'm 17 btw.

Thanks..:)

pop in ask if there are any vacancies, and ask for an appliaction form.

I personally wouldn't ask in pc world myself

It is a good start and can create a good foundation for a CV. Working in a DSGi company can prove you have a variety of skills such as selling, multi-tasking, working in a fast paced enviroment, customer service and so on. If he was older, then yes avoid them but due to his age and lack of anything on a CV, DSGi is a good first step. :)

Tip: Physically go to the stores in the morning and ask to speak to the store manager. Perhaps ring ahead to check he or she is there. Approach said manager and say you wish to work for them and present them with a CV whether they need it or not. It shows you actually WANT the job and aren't running around applying for anything. Worked a charm when i got a job a while ago - got a call 12 hours later inviting me to have an interview and got the job straight away.

Wow thanks for the tips, I will phone PC world and ask when the manager is available then go in and ask him (with a CV at hand).

About the CV, what sort of qualities would places like PC world be after, what sort of thing should I put on the CV?

I got my job in a small PC shop by going in when the owner was there and having a chat with them for a little while. If you're enthusiastic and eager, and they're looking for vacancies you stand a good chance by doing that. I was just 16 at the time though, and the company was fairly new, and has never been too formal in accepting CVs for just part time work.

For your CV, make sure you mention any instances where you've dealt with people and customers etc, this is an invaluable skill, often neglected in PC repair shops!

I applied for a job in PCW, didn't get it though did I, they didn't even to both contact me after my interview.

I did start a thread about working there which has a lot of useful info in there but I can't find it now.

So you can't go there and ask the manager?

You can and i strongly suggest you do that. It shows you are eager and willing to do a bit of work to get the job. Think of it like this, my mate spent a couple of hours spending applications off on the internet and didn't once go physically to a shop or ring up. I applied for a handful of places and didn't use the internet. I got a job.

Also, it gives the manager the chance to match the name to a face so when/if he does see your online application, he will know what you are like. :)

Even though some companies say they only recruit through the internet, it isn't always strictly true!

My girlfriend and I applied at at a very well known company that sells PCs and Laptops (probably the most known?) in the UK.

She went there and asked for the manager and spoke asked him if they had any vanacies, and luckily, there was, so she just handed in her CV and left with a smile on her face and gave her thanks to the manager and walked out.

I did the same thing as her a bit later that week.

And guess what!? I'm a tech monkey.. I started building my computers from scratch at a very young age (around 11 or 12), and I didn't get the job :( and she got the job :p
Congratulations to her though. lol :p

It must be because she is more charismatic than me and has the sort of personality that you'd just love even at just the very first minute that you meet her. Although the thing that kinda gets to me is how many pretty ladies work there... maybe they're a bit bias? :p

^ Same thing happened to a mate of mine who got a job in the same store as me. Both of them went into the store to speak to the manager and the one who did all the talking and asked lots of questions got the job. The quiet one didn't. :)

What I wouldn't do is mention a competitor about 100 times this thread, in a forum that doesn't allow competitors to be mentioned; that doesn't just apply to the OP either.

Also, some of you should REALLY know better :p

Can someone get a facepalm pic in here? Stat?

Edit:- Oh...and possibly a motivational picture thingy with the FAQ thread in the picture with something like "FAQ : Read it, noob!".

Skyfall? If you're reading this?

From previous experience, mentioning DSGi has been okay...just not the 'names'. :)

Edit:- Love how all the ninja edit's start rollin' in :D
