Right after a 'friendly' game of footy (indoor) last thursday I finally went to A&E yesterday to find out the bruising on my foot was caused by a partial rupture of Achilles Tendon. They reckon I'll be on crutches and plaster for anything from 4-12 weeks.

Has anyone else hese suffered this and can give me tips on what to and what not to do.

Just tried to have a shower and it was torture !!! :o

I have suffered the same - It will take time to heal and take all medical advice. I wont lie to you but for me it took many years of physio and still get twinges of pain now 16 years later - I just have to keep doing stretches and I'll be fine. Dont worry all will be fine... I can still play sports and do 10 k runs.

Might give the footy up now (I'm 40 next month), but is it right for the toes on leg in plaster to be more purple than the ones on the other foot.

No you will be playing footy again :) - just make sure you start getting physio soon... ie in the next few weeks - not months! You will get tendonitus if theres no movement to your ankle

I'm due back to the hospital in 4 weeks for them to check it out. I take it physio will only start after the cast is off?

I was also told that if id did not heal within 8 weeks I might need surgery - anyone went through that?

our injury sounds nasty however.

Funny thing was it happened in the first 5 minutes of the game and I never felt anything serious until I took of my boot at the end of the game. And thenm it was the next day before the leg swelled up.

Aparently though it's common for ruptures and tears to not be felt until the next day.

My Uncle snapped his playing squash, he was howling, sounded so sore :( He can now play football (well his attempt at football) so keep your head up!

I did my ankle ligaments in and it's taken 5 months, I stretch several times every day and I'm just being patient.

Through playing Rugby I have had a >90% rupture (i.e. the radiologist said it was literally hanging together by a few strands of tendon) in my left leg and a full snap in my right (3 years apart). The rupture they decided to heal naturally and it took 20 weeks before they finally removed the cast (16 of which were non weight bearing) and about 6 months of phsyio to feel 'ok' again. The full snap was obviously operated on straight away and I was out of cast and in physio inside 12 weeks:confused: and 3 months of physio was playing again.

Achilles Tendons really can vary in their heal rate, depends on where exactly the rupture is, the extent and how 'messy' the damage is.

I'm still playing Rugby so just follow all their instructions and make sure you attend physio fully when the cast comes off. Also look forward to seeing some improvement in your shoulders and upper arms :D ;)

why dont rugby players injure themselves more than footballing nancies? -0 your injury sounds nasty however.

From personal experience I would agree that I sustained far fewer injuries playing rugby then football but the rugby ones were much more severe ie broken bones instead of pulled hamstrings. Not sure why but thats what I and several friends would agree on.

You will be fine mate, Ive done the same and my friend has snapped his!! We're both playing sports as normal, obv his needed an op to fix but after 6 months hes back to 99.9%.

I tore my achiles tendon about 3/4 the way through about 14-15 years ago when i was at school (man i feel old now!). Was agony, went to A+E dept at local hospital who refused to put a cast on it, so I only had one of those stretchy support bandage things...they didnt even give me crutches! I remember I ended borrowing my grans zimmer frame! Was off my feet for a fair while. I wont lie to you..even now 15 years later i still get a sharp pain up the back of my right leg if i push off from this leg when I start running, although i believe this is because i got absolutely no aftercare for this and the initial treatment i got was frankly rubbish! sounds like your in better hands than i was so you should be fine.

Your lucky. My gf snapped both of hers the same day and was in wheelchair for 3 months.

Neither was operated on as they don;t like doing that nowadays, they prefer to let them heal by themselves.

7 months on she is walking fine but has good and bad days with pain and swelling.

Basically it takes time.

Op is your name Steve?!

If so then I sorted out the XML issue but we have a new issue which requires great beard stroking *strokes beard*

I ruptured the achilles in my right foot, had it diagnosed at the doctors and at physio.
Carried on working (delivery driver) and played football the next week, just kicked with my left foot and played in goal.
