Hi there,

I'm finally planning to get around to upgrading my 6 year old i5-4690k build.

I don't have an exact budget but I'm looking to base the cpu around an i7 (or ryzen equivalent)

It will mostly be used for gaming. Currently at 1080p, but I'm planning on getting a new 1440p monitor early next year.

Parts I'm looking at upgrading are
Motherboard
CPU
RAM

I was wondering if I can reuse my
Focus Plus 550W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply
and
Hyper Evo 212 CPU cooler (happy for alternative suggestions if this won't be sufficient)

Reusing Case, GPU (upgrading to 3000 series later) and SSD.

Thanks

PSU = may be a problem if its a 3070 or above, lower end 3000 cards when they will be released (3060ti is on the cards & there may be more to come) no idea if 550 watts will be sufficient for those yet to be announced lower end cards. Same goes for any future AMD Cards too. Current cards = may be adequate if you decide to buy an older card instead but check the card specs first.

Cooler = if you bought the cooler the same as your current system theres a good chance it will fit in a current intel board & CPU, no guarantee of that though. AMD probably but I doubt it.

The 212 isn't a bad cooler. The AMD mounting kit should work with Ryzen if you've still got it.

CPU wise, I'd look for Black Friday deals on a 3600 and x470 mobo. You'll need ram too, so you might do better with a bundle.

PSU could be a problem - like @Grimley said, it might work with a 3060ti or maybe a 6800, but you'll have to see what the reviews say.

Are you looking at 1440p 60Hz or are you thinking 120Hz+?

Cooler bought that many years ago doesn't have AM4 compatible mounting.
Not sure if Coolermaster sells mounting kits for it.
Arctic Freezer 34 is at least as good cooler.

For next-gen cards that 550W PSU is certainly tight.
Mainstream/mid level cards are comnig out maybe early next year.

Can't see X470 boards becoming enough discounted to make sense.
B550 boards kick them to nuts in everything.

What CPU would you recommend? I was looking at the i7 10700k. I don't have any knowledge of AMD.
Ryzen 5600X is now bang per buck choise.
6 cores/12 threads is more than enough for all older games made in "Four cores is high end" Intel stagnation era and for most current ones.
And in year or two you could go discount shopping for say 12 core to give enough cores for games designed for consoles with 8 core CPU and with extra cores for background junk of Winbloat PC.

I've got a 5800x..... but not the rest of the build. What motherboard what you recommend? Also would an air cooler be viable, if so, which one? Thanks.

A good noctua would work but you're better off with a 240mm aio (it'll cost about the same).

For mobo, what about the Gigabyte X570 Gaming X? You'd need to check bios support but it should be fine. It's not too pricey and gives you full pcie 4.0.
