Partition experts - why can't I extend?

Hi guys,

I'd like to able to extend the C: drive so that it makes use of the 50gb or so of unallocated free space. I understand that it is not possible under windows 7 (I've tried!) but I can't even make it happen with parted magic - and that never gives me any problems :confused:

Looking at the above, is there anything I've done wrong with the initial setup?

tried expanding the back up partition to use all the unallocated space? then move/expand/resize the c drive partition?

Try using EASEUS Partition Master.

Use a Linux live cd that contains Gparted.

I was originally trying to this is windows and with parted magic (which uses gparted), I was only trying to expand/extend each time though - you think moving the backup partition to the end of the drive and then expanding c: would work? I'll try that later

I came around another quite useful looking app, partition wizard? It was bootable too.

You can only expand a partition into space thats adjacent to it. So as others have said, move the backup partition so that the space is between the partitions then either can can extended.

If you are paritioning a disk and not using all the space immediately (because you don't always know which partition will need more space ... for me its a competition between more games being installed on D: vs my son's inability to delete old saved games filling up their "home" dirs on C:

As for partitioning tools .. I've been using "parition wizard" recently - free and seems to work!

You cant do this with Windows, you can only extend the partition at the end, its to do with the MFT and file system and windows no capable of remapping every cluster of data...

This. Perfect! Thanks all, I did the lot in Parted Magic/gparted; great free app

Takes time to move a partition though, doesn't it? I guess it's writing it to completely different part of the disk?

Yep, it's a big operation moving partitions about and doing it reliably

That's why they state the software is offered AS IS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY AT ALL WHATSOEVER SO USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!11! Never had GParted fail me though
