if i partition my 500GB HDD, one partition for operating system and 1 partition for files how much space would i need for OS (XP) and would it make it easier to install/reinstall XP or Vista if needed without having to backup all my files on the other partition?

Yes it would it make it easier to install/reinstall XP or Vista if needed without having to backup all your files.

It depends on how much data you have, but id Keep 200gb for Vista - XP.
Others im sure will say less.

For XP 20-25GB will be fine for Vista 35-40GB, these sizes would be for Windows OS folder and programs, for installing games, use the other (or separate) partition...

yes keep the OS and all the OS files and folders installled on 1 partition and install all my software, games and also put my images, music and other files on the other partition.

i was going to use about 80gb for XP or Vista

Personally, I have 150GB for my vista, program and games installations then 350GB for my other storage. Sometimes things dont work if stuff isn't installed on the same "drive" as windows, due to shoddy programming and the likes when installing patches etcetera.
