Gonna format in the next couple of days, but this time i'm going to make a seperate partition exclusively for the OS (i know, i should have done it before).

What would be a safe size for this partition?

I just looked at my Windows folder, it's 2Gb, i assume i'd have to take the Document and Settings folder into account too, this is 31 Gb !!

I have in total used about 13 gigs for my installation and all my programs. I have a figure of about 15 in my head but I'm not so sure. Use nLite to trim out what you don't want from windows as well.

Thing is, i have all my music in My Documents/My Music.
Would i be able to move the My Documents foder to a different partition once XP is installed?
Will take a look at nLite.

Start -> Right click my documents. Change target to D: or whatever you call the larger documents partition.

You need to do it on the my documents bit on the start menu, not my music/pictures, etc.

about 6gb if you have your emails/my docs on a different drive, plus page file. Also don't forget you might want a hibernate file which you can't move from c: and that is as big as how much ram you have.

I have now formatted, I set the C drive at 10Gigs and have installed MCE without any problems.

One question though, do i still install programs such as antivirus, firewall, winrar, firefox to the C drive or do I now place them on the newly created E drive ?

Is it OK to "contaminate" the C drive with these important apps ?

Id put them onto a seperate partition, i have set aside 25GB for my apps (after about 2 months id only used up 7.8GB anyway) but i like the extra space incase. i also have partition for backups, downloads, torrents, games, mp3s, videos etc. But you might not need mp3 or video partition and so on. But set asin enough space is important.

My C:\ partition is 10GBs in size for Windows XP and Programs folder, only 4.8GBs of the 10GBs is used, have moved My Documents to D:\, and pagefile onto E:\ (might be better on D:\, ie closer to C:\, but runs well on E:\). Partitions C:\, D:\ (64.2GBs) and E:\ (64.2GBs) are 2 x 74GB Raptors in RAID0, I use E:\ to install and run any games, use Raxco PerfectDisk 7 as a defrag program.

This is what works for me. :)

I just had to reinstall windows as I thought 5Gb would be enough - was trying to keep it small and lean etc, but for some reason the page file is now associated with a particular drive, so you cant seem to move it even to another partition like you used to - or no way I can see. (Install was 2.0Gb or so and page fle was also upto 2Gb and windows kept on saying i was running out of space on C)

grrrrrrr

Now set to 20Gb

I think 10Gb seems to be the optimum/most popular size for the OS partition, just to be on the safe side.

My
C:/ (Windows and Programs) drive is 50Gbs
D:/ (My Work) drive is 30Gb
E:/ (Multimedia ~ Pictures, Movies, Music, Downloads) drive is 70Gb

Above setup works very well for me :)

35GB for System (no pagefile cause i have 2gb ram) and no programs or docs.
65GB Music
50GB My Docs
250GB Backups (entire seagate HD)
50GB Apps
45GB Games
100GB TV/Movies
