partitioning external HDD without erasing on mac

Am trying to back up my macbook HDD. However when i reformatted by external HDD i didnt put any partitions in and now when i try to use super duper to clone the mac drive onto my external hdd it wants to delete everything on the current drive.
So i want to add a partition called 'Back up', is there a way of doing this without formatting the drive?

Boot camp allows you to non-destructively partition... I am not sure if it useful to you, but it certainly is possible.

EDIT TO ADD

So basically use Bootcamp - make an NTFS partition - and then once you have the proportions you want - just make the NTFS partition into HFS+. Kludgy, and I haven't tried it!

i managed to find a trial version of 'Drive genuis', and just partition'd it with that. There are a few other programs out there that lets you do it too, if anyone is looking for one, DiskStudio looks good but you have to pay for it.

Wouldn't disc utility be able to do the partition?

it can but it erases all the data first. other programs dont.
