Hey guys!

Just wondering about partitions... Now I have a 1tb HDD, compared to the measly 120gb I had before it's a lot of room!!

So I'm wondering, even after putting my stuff on my new PC, can I still partition my HDD into different sections for my OS, Music, Games etc..? and just move my stuff to each partition?

Also, which software do you all prefer?

Thanks,
Cam.

Hi, yes you can...

Using 'Disk Management' in Windows, right click your OS partition and select shrink volume. When that operation has completed you'll then have some unallocated space which you can use to create some more partitions. I've just done something similar using an SSD and a HDD so I personally would opt for using an extra partition to recreate a second 'Users' folder on the separate partition with the same folder structure as the 'Users' folder from your OS partition. Make the permissions on the root of the new partition and the new 'Users' folder and each Usernames' root folder match those on the OS partition. Each Usernames' root folder doesn't inherit permissions from it's parent i.e. 'Users'. Once that's done you can right click the subfolders from the 'Users' folder on the OS partition, such as 'My Music', 'My Pictures' etc and choose 'Properties' > 'Location' and update the path to point to the new 'Users' folder on the new partition, eg 'D:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Music'. The 'Music' folder isn't yet created until you click 'Apply' and then the OS will create it in the new location and move the contents from the old location to the new.

I'd also create a partition you can use as a Recovery partition to create a disk image of your system as a backup in case you ever need to return to how you currently have things configured. Ideally this should be on a different physical drive to the OS but if you only have one HDD then a separate partition still offers some use in the event of something being messed up, just not the resilience to cope with a drive failure.

Ahaaa!! Thank you very much for the reply mate. Just thinking of making partitions for games etc... Just to separate things out a little bit :)

Thanks mate!
