Parts to make a PC to run train simulator

I'm just thinking of memory, i know the i5 2500k running at it's O/C speed of 4.5gig can't be easilly beaten without spending a lot of money... for probably negligable gains as this computer will only ever run train simulator.

But what about memory, as in the speed of it etc? the MB can handle : DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules, would i see any gain in going for 16 gig of 2133mhz stuff?

i also believe that memory is overclocked too? so i guess i need to find out what mines running at... it's the low profile stuff so possibly not much... there's plenty of room for the memory with the big mohecean fins sprouting from it, and the CPU cooler doesnt overhang the memory slots.

AAAAAaaaannndd, i've screwed up,

I read something about the MB having an M-sata port, and thought that was an M.2 port, so ordered an M.2 ssd,

So.. how to fix this... what are overclockers like with returning items bought in error? or... can i upgrade the MB to one that has this M.2 port on it, that will still run my existing processor... i think i know the answer to this... i will just be throwing money for no gains. is there such a thing as an M.2 to Msata converter?

I got a bit overthinky, my laptop uses one of these little card style ssd's, and i thought the GA-Z68XP-UD3 MB would have maybe 2 of those M.2 ports, and i could plug the laptops ssd in and coppy the railworks folder over lighting fast,

Simplest answer is an M-SATA to 2.5" SATA adapter, so you can use it like a normal SSD. That said, of course OcUK accept returns :)

You might find a motherboard with one M.2 slot for your CPU but probably not two. Also bear in mind the M.2 slot can have SATA or PCIe interface (or both) so the motherboard must accommodate the SSD.

You can get PCIe cards to mount PCIe M.2 SSDs on but honestly I think you'd be going overkill. Drop OcUK a line.

I believe M2 slots only came to the desktop with Z97. Even my Z87 Maximus VI Hero doesn't have one and that was a fairly high end board back then. As LuckyBenski says, you could use one of these but to be honest I would return it and just get a SSD. I am not sure but I don't think it will work as a boot drive and you most likely won't notice any difference in TS2019 from using one over a normal SSD. Same with the memory, going from 1600mhz to 2133mhz will see very little, if any increase in frame rates. Now that it's 64bit I would take quantity over speed anyday and I wouldn't want to spend money on expensive DDR3 when you can't carry it over to future upgrades as they all use DDR4 now. I only have 2133mhz memory because they are the awesome Samsung Green 1600mhz kits that can overclock to 2400mhz (2133mhz with tight timings is the sweet spot) and have been overclocked since the day I recieved them. Overclocking memory is a slow and tedious process and takes longer than finding a stable overclock on the cpu. I would say make sure all your sticks are running at 1600mhz (CPU-z will tell you this, don't forget it's DDR so 1600mhz will show as 800mhz) and maybe try and tighten the timings on the second kit to match the Corsair.

Really painless to get the RMA thing from OCuk... sent it back as soon as i got it, ordered a sata6 ssd this time, was sooo looking forwards to the *upto 1000 wotsits a second speeds of an M.2 ssd too lol,

I'm playing with the GFX card atm... figured to try the DSR thing after not really getting anywhere with the MSXAA and all thos settings... got it on 4x up sampling.. then back down to 1080p resolution...and boom... bodwhat a difference... almost all the shimmering, moire type things along the sleepers and fences, and flashy overhead wires has gone.

Getting a good 50fps on most routes once outside the main stations... Konstanz to Villingen is a way over populated route... tons of high texture objexts... they put in the max they could when they made it.. like the towns go on for a few Km past what you can see from the cab of the train with full houses not those backdrop type things.

I get over 20 in the big stations with almost every platform having a train in it or going through.

Was amazed at how much lighter the 1060 is compared to the 580, and only has a single 6 pin power connector too.. 580 had 2 x 8 pin ones... my room will prolly be cooler now.

Thinking stupidly here... this CUDA thing... where it uses spare gpu cycles for other things... could that be used by putting the 580 in the 2nd 16x pcie slot? not running them in sli.. as the 1060 cant... not even connecting a monitor to the 580... just letting it work as an extra processor? or am i thinking of things that cant do.

I don't even think that Cuda does anything in TS2019. Just run the 1060. Another plus with the 1060 over the 580 is power consumption is much less. It's a cracking little card.
