Currently im in my first year of driving and use my Pass Plus certificate for my discount.

When i apply for my renewal this year, can i use the Pass Plus again for a discount? If so how many years is it valid for?

pass plus is only vaid for the year that it is taken.

you cant take it and not declare it to an insurance company until 5 years down the line.

although I am sure most places would take into consideration that you hold it even in your second year.

It lasts forever but i doubt you will find it helps once you have a years no claims bonus to hand :) Mine doesnt seem to offer any discount these days.

.

This is not true, where does this come from? I see nothing on any of my pass plus literature which mentions any kind of expiration date.

Mine actually accounts for 1 year NCB :)

Some companies don't like the fact that my NCB didn't tally up with the number of years I'd been driving, so when I was getting quotes for the GSi, I tried 2 years NCB and 1 year NCB with Pass Plus. The quotes were exactly the same.

sorry bad wording.
It was always explained to me (whilst insuring my first car) that a pass plus certificate would only have a bearing on your insurance within a 1 year period of taking the test. it will not have any reflection on a premium after this period.

i didnt take it anyway.

That is definately not true. I know after a loss of NCB a friend of mine claimed a large discount with NUD for his pass plus, he had been driving for 3 years at the time.

he didnt have any no claims.
after 1 year driving you are no longer a new driver because you are assumed to have 1 years NCB. if he lost them then its back to square one. so I can see why his pass plus reflected on his premium.

I think the reasoning behind it is that a discount is achieved with no claims, and insurers in the pass plus scheme do not honour no claims and a pass plus on the same scheme, as this is 2 types of discount.

we need an insruance bod to clear this up for us :)

The way I understood it was that the insurer would count pass plus as 1 years NCB effectively. Thus giving you the initial discount on your insurance. However once you had actually completed a years driving with no claims when it came to renewal it would still only count as though you'd got 1 years NCB?

I wish I'd done it either way :(

thebrasso - that seems to be how it works with everyone i have tried. Its almost like having a protected 1 years NCB in the event of a fault claim against you.

AGW has thrown a spanner in the works though by saying that he has managed to wangle an extra year of NCB out of them for it, i wanna know how as i could jump a year which would be fantastic.

O/T slightly but what you should try is a bit of BS about what you have been offered by other insurers.

I just renewed for 02/05/06 onwards. Admiral wouldn't go below a grand (who I'm with now). Sky quoted £890. Adrian Flux sorted me for £719. But I told them I had been offered £786 with Sky and a £200 excess so Flux beat the premium but said they could only give me a £250 excess. Thats as a member of Honda Revolutions as well which costs £25, and gives a reasonable discount.

Bearing in mind I drive a group 16 car, modified (exhaust) and I only have 1 years NCB and 3 points for an SP50. And I first paid £1800 last July for a 10 month accelerator.

I'd be interested to find out which insurers would give you 2 years NCB for having done pass plus as well....

Which insurer was that with mate? Ive got pass plus but never include it in quotes now

First insurer was CIS. I'm now using the NCB I gained from them for my current insurer, Elephant.

I guess I was quite lucky, as CIS stated that I had 45% NCB on the cover note which equated to 2 years.

Elephant simply asked for proof of my NCB, so I sent the CIS cover note over to them. :)

edit... Just had another look on Elephant's website... you chose how many years NCB you have and then in the 'Type of licence' field, there's an option for 'Full UK Licence with Pass Plus'

You still can! I don't know why, but there seems to be a general concensus of opinion that you can't do your pass plus if you've been driving for a year already - which is wrong! You can take it at any time. I did mine with a driving instructor mate of mine last year after 3 1/2 years behind the wheel.

It didn't make much difference to my premium (a little maybe), but I picked up some useful tips and tricks, and some more advanced things too - so well worth doing to improve your road awareness IMO.

Sadly it doesnt make any difference to the premium :(

I was under the inpression it was for one year, untill i noticed a couple of people on the forum saying how it was worth another year.

Might give the C.I.S. a call as i would be entitled to 15% staff discount should i take a policy out from them.
