Sounds about right, I paid £1200 first year on my Rover 200 when I was 18, and that was with Pass Plus as well.

Please tell me were you can get insurance for £1200 for a 18 year old. The cheapest quote i have ever managed is £1900 third party on a 1.0 cinquecento

Don't get a car and spend the money saved on spelling lessons. ;)

In all seriousness (and courtesy), get the cheapest POS you can, insure it as cheaply as you can and drive sensibly until you've got at least a year's NCB.

I was lucky enough to have a brand new VW Polo, but only because the first year's insurance was included with the purchase price of the car. Looking back, I would probably have bought a rubbish (but safe) car, and spent the money saved on something nicer down the line.

Mine was with Zurich, on a Rover 200, and we live in a very cheap postcode. (ST14) When I renewed it paid £700 (with 1 years NCB) fully comp with Churchill.

Rubbish!

I paid £900 as a named driver on a 1.8l Ford Sierra as my first car. Then when I was 19 I insured a 1.3l Fiesta 3rd Party Fire and Theft with zero no claims for £700. Renewed it with 2 years NCB for £390 TPFT, but then scrapped the car, and will be setting up TPFT for £350 on my new Mondey with the 2 years NCB. Your not looking hard enough.

But you will realise, all cheap cars (Sierra £200, Fiesta £500) and have built me up some nice no claims. Try Bell.co.uk or Flexibell.co.uk for decent Zero NCB insurance. One thing however, avoid all things with a "young driver up a tree" image, such as small engined Corsas and Saxos, Fiestas and Clios and the like. Because of the demand from people just like you they keep there value and are higher to insure due to the image. Go for something obscure, maybe a Diesel Xsara, or a Rover 100 or something with a granny image. It will be cheaper to insure and cheaper to buy. I know someone who recently bought a Rover 100 with 60k on the clock in mint condition for £200. The owner only drove 6 miles a week now hed retired and had had it for years.
