I finally passed my test (third go) and only got 5 minors. :D

So I'm now looking at getting a car. Can anyone recommend something that would be cheap to run and insure?

Congratulations!

I'm no car expert, and tbh I'm only here because my mouse slipped onto the wrong forum section on the drop down list, but may I suggest that you buy something cheap that'll get you from A to B. Then when you've got a few years driving experience, and no claims (hopefully! :)), you'll be able to get something with a bit more power. Like a Ferrari or something, though I don't know your budget tbh. :o

Something old is cheap to run and insure, plus easy to fix if it goes wrong ;)

Played, I too passed on 3rd attempt. Great feeling isn't it?

As for a car, something under 1k would be ideal. Make and model would be down to personal preference.
 
Well done mate, my first car was a Mrk 1 golf gti, and I wrote it off about six days later :rolleyes:

As has been said, cheep and cheerfull is by far the best bet for a first car. :)

My friend has had his 1.1 XN for over 3 years and he rags it day in day out and it hasn't had any faults with it apart from consumables!

I passed in March this year, 2nd time with 4 minors (:p) & got myself a W reg Rover 200. Seems to forgive me for little mistakes that I make whilst letting me know I've made them too :D

give us a budget and we can be a bit more fair with the car recommendations :p

Some sage words at this point are:

You are not invincible
A Speed limit is a limit not a guideline
Contrary to popular belief, children do not bounce that well
Your mates will appreciate your showing off, but they wont pay for repairs

Not that Im saying anything about you, just an observation from my experience with young drivers.

Anyway, saxos are pretty common among the newer drivers, but clios are pretty good on insurance and parts and IIRC are pretty good in the event of an accident.

I don't like peugeots or fords, but thats just me.
