Passed my test this afternoon with 8 minors. Not superb but it's a pass and I'm feeling pretty good :)

Next step is a car for around the £700 mark. Cheap to insure. What do you recommend? What should I steer clear of?

I won't be buying a micra, ka or mini.

Well done dude :)

For that price you'd probably be best off grabbing someone who knows something about the motor trade and going down the auctions.

Well done.

Fiesta or a Clio.

Just get something with cheap parts in case you pick up something that's waiting to die.

tbh at this sort of price condition is much more important than the model / make of the car. £700 should get you something with 12months MOT and some tax on it without too much trouble. The local rag is probably the best bet.

I think Jez from these forums got himself a 1/2 decent volvo turbo for less than £700

I wasn't selling!...

I was joking!... I knew he'd not be interested in a Rover!.. (No one is! :( )

Anyhew... As I said... Nice One Geeza!!!... Was it you first Test??? :)

Is it a bad idea to opt for a Rover? Some crackers on Autotrader with ~'99 plates for around my price mark. Are parts a serious issue?

I appreciate I could get a larger and older diesel but I don't want anything that's going to kill the insurance. However I will be going as 3rd pf&t under my father's name.

Dont forget to take into account the price of insurance on top of the cost mate, its likely to be around twice the cost of your car :(

/Malty's ears ***** up...

As much fun and as much as i love the Volvo, I dont think a group 16 car is a great first car though :p

The N/A ES might be worth a look, however.... The car i think that fits this budget, is pokey and wont go wrong unless ya drop it off a cliff is a Toyota Corolla GL Liftback.

I had one of these for a year, drove it to hell and back, only problem was when i whacked it on a big mound driving off-road :P Had to have a new rear section. (Cost about 50 quid inc fitting :))

Is Autotrader generally overpriced?

I know a mechanic/car boffin and shall be having a chat with him come the weekend.

3rd pf&t insurance surely wont be more than £300 if I do it through my father?

In a way yes, people are usually open to reasonable offers unless stated otherwise in the ad, perhaps look for cars slightly over budget knowing you should get a £100 or so off.
