As much fun and as much as i love the Volvo, I dont think a group 16 car is a great first car though :p

*ahem*whispers that it's a group 13*ahem*

Well done dude :)

For that price you'd probably be best off grabbing someone who knows something about the motor trade and going down the auctions.

Whilst this is true in principal you really need someone who knows the auctions as well as cars. At some auctions there are far too many private punters who push the price beyond what you might pay for private stuff in the autotrader!!! Pick the right auction tho and you are laughing.

Just have a look around your local garages. Also you could ask in main dealerships if they have had any old part ex's in. Should be able to get one of them dirt cheap.

As for the car itself anything with a small engine (1.6 and below) would suit you fine.

A quick list of decent little cars:

Corsa
Micra
Fiesta (newer shapes better)
Mini (check for rust)
Punto
Clio
Older astras
civic
rover 200

However I will be going as 3rd pf&t under my father's name.
Don't forget that a) you'll have to declare yourself as the main driver and b) this won't accrue you any NCB.

Forgetting C --->

Possible forum uproar! :p

Best getting your own policy, having some NCD makes a huge diff!

If I were to go it alone on the insurance it's going to cost more than the car, which doesn't make sense.

Where's the potential uproar? Forgive me I am quite ignorant here, where's the harm on me being a named driver under my father? I'm insured, you're insured, where's there the problem?

If you're the main driver of the car and are only a named driver on your father's policy then you're committing insurance fraud.

Its not a problem provided you drive less than your dad or you tell the insurance that even though your a named driver you will be using the car the most, its insurance fraud otherwise.

Edit - beaten to it :(

Also this business about the insurance being more than the car, you need to remember your not just insuring your car, if you smash into a v8 Aston and its your fault your insurance will need to pay, your insuring the risk not your car.

OK cheers I'll make sure they're in the know that I'll be the main driver.

Gonna have a ring round this arvo for a few that have caught my eye :)

I don't understand that...yeah it might be insurance fraud in terms of getting it a bit cheaper than you would normally but how is anyone gonna know who's done the most miles in the car??????

My mate's insured with as a named driver on his mam's policy (she hasn't driven for about 10 years)

P.S. If you go with direct line as a named driver you do accure a no claims bonus, for when you want to go it alone, or buy a BMW

They will check up

When I had my accident in my Mum's Astra as a named driver they asked around to ensure that my Mum used the car more than me

This is rife so they are hot at discovering it

You also open yourselves up to possible prosecution from the police for driving without insurance as the insurance itself is void

You don't build up any no claims bonus either so you're just delaying the inevitable

Insurance is stupid for your first few years and it's a lot to stomach but that's just how it is
