Passive AND active subwoofer?

Reading the manual for my Sony DAV-S300 and it says not to plug in the passive subwoofer if using the active subwoofer preout. Why is this? Surely since the preout isn't amplified then plugging in an active subwoofer wouldn't put any strain on the system allowing me to also use the passive subwoofer?

Unless the Sony senses the presence of a connection on the sub out socket (or the lack of a connection on the sub's speaker out socket) then I'd agree. Besides, just like all these disc based all-in-one systems, the sub isn't really a sub at all. It's just a mid-bass speaker, and not a great one at that.
