Hi All I'm looking to buy a Passive PSU, modular would be great. I've looked at the seasonics but are there any quiter ones about?
 
Why passive? There are extremely quiet actively cooled PSUs that cost a heck of a lot less. Check out the Corsair HX 520 for starters. Mine is inaudible.

Hi it is for a HTPC, just looking to make is as quite as possible.

I bought a 450 Corsair which going by slientpc is the quietest corsair.And in a normal pc,i.e a case fan running at 1200rpm you cannot hear it at all.

However if your fans are running at 600/700rpm or even slower.You can hear an annoying hum from the corsair.Most people will not notice this hum,but if you really want a super quiet pc.Then a fanless psu is the way to go.I bought a foxtron zen 300watt fanless and you cannot hear anything at all!.I will never go back to psu with a fan!

But! saying all that for HTPC a corsair would be fine as you will not be near the pc anyway so will not hear the hum
 
Thanks guys, i think I'll be buying fanless or at the very least a psu that has fan control on it.
 
My PC was almost fanless apart from the PSU (Corsair HX520) and being honest it was hard to hear it. It certinly wouldn't be noticed while watching films or listening to music. TBH the Corsair is a very quiet PSU and well worth considering . You should look at a well known site that specialises in 'silent pc' stuff, without knowing what else you intend on running in your HTPC a fanless PSU may not be ideal.
 
VX 450 != HX 520

The 450 is a budget PSU.

Yes but it's still made by seasonic and it also gets a better rating than the 520 on slientpc in terms of quietness

If you check out slientpc lots people notice the humming on the HX 520's.

I have ordered the vx450. It will go in my bedroom PC, which needs to be quiet. It will be used almost like a HTPC.

I will let you guys know how it goes, as I will be using it to overclock a C2D to 3Ghz+.

From all the reviews Ive read (and Ive read many), the vx450 is a very good power supply unit. hx520w is overkill unless you intend to run SLI.

Just to comment on the VX450 that I installed yesterday. It is running an Intel E2160 (1.8Ghz) @ 2.9Ghz, default voltage), smoothly, with no issues. It is the quietest PSU I have ever used. Once the case is closed it wont be your loudest component. The Samsung HD501 is louder.

I cant comment on the HX520W as I havent used it. The VX450W gets the thumbs up though.
