passport help

One of my staff came to me today and asked me about applying for a passport.

Now I don't know if he is changing from a child to and adult passport or just applying for his first adult passport but he seems to think that he needs 2 passport photos signing but that also one person must be VAT registered, must supply that and their british passport number as well as signing a photo.

Now, I have had a look on the website, and it just sounds wrong to me.

Is it just 2 signed passport photos from people in authority (boss, doctor) that have known him for more that 2 years. As well as birth certificate etc.

I think only 1 photo needs signing, but he is correct about needing the person who signed the photos passport number too. But not the VAT registered bit

I was also under the impression that "boss" doesn't qualify you to sign the photos.
I believe the person needs to be a "professional" - so hold some kind of professional qualifications or hold a certain authority within a community.

Thats correct, it has to be someone professional such as teacher, doctor, bank manager etc and they should have known you for 2 years. I've just had mine replaced after putting the old one through the washing machine. I did the check and send service through the post office and it was back in under 2 weeks.

when i applied for my provisional drivers licence it was ok for my employer to sign the photos have things changed?

Its very different for passports than driving licence

Yes i remember when i first got my passport. Id not been to the doctors for years so he wouldnt sign it and i didnt know any "professional" person personally. I think i ended up getting the company MD to sign it for me even though he had only seen me about 5 times in the 3 years id worked there. Its one of those things that made sense to the people making the rules up but totally disregarded the fact that there might actually be people who dont know professionals in their normal lives apart from when they need to goto one as a client!
