Passport help...

I'm sure the counter signer also has to put their own passport number down aswell as signing it. My doctors won't sign them not even for a fee.

The thing that annoys me is that, and the fact that you know that a lot of people will forge a signature and get away with it because there's no way the passport office is going to check up on these. It's only honest people like the OP's Mum who suffer by trying to follow stupid rules.

You cant really forge it, you need the counter signatories passport number as well.

That's right usually my doctor would sign it with out a fee but he would also put down his passport number as it is required.

Yeah it's pretty immoral really. They'll happily break the law by countersigning a passport for someone they have never even met as long as they get money for it.

Whether it breaks the law or not I don't know for sure... but I don't see it as immoral - The aim of the process is to verify that the person in the picture is the person named on the form. If you're registered as a patient for years at the same surgery then phone in advance with your details etc.. go along there and have a GP verify that you are indeed the person in the picture & countersign it then you've achieved that verification process as well as most people. Whether the 2 year rule applies or not in this situation I'm not sure... but I think the legal aspect there is separate from any moral aspect.

If it's illegal then it invalidates the passport which makes it immoral. They are charging for a service which is not valid!

My GP wouldn't sign mine because he claimed he hadn't known me for 3 years or whatever it was but he had... he actually asked if I still needed it signing about a year later lol

Got my sons school to do it instead for half the price.
I'd never even seen the headteacher before but she still signed it just because my child went to that school.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, unfortunately still in the same boat. There is nobody she currently has known for 2+ years who has their own passport. Passport office just repeat the same stuff on their site.

It's basically the knowing her 2+ years bit thats the problem. As mentioned in my OP, they're all moved on, dead or personal friends.

I never thought as a UK citizen for the last 56 years in good standing, never having been in trouble or really stepped out of line would have such a problem getting a passport.

A lot of upset both on my and her side right now as it looks as though she wont be at my wedding. If i'd known it would be this hard, i'd have arranged it for the UK. :(

try the local shop keeper? or something.

I think anyone who is self employed or that owns a business can do it too, does she have a regular hair salon she uses or something?
if so surely the manager could do it?
does she go to church or do any volunteering ?
BTW some people have just had a friend do it for them even when they aren't even eligible and it still got accepted

She doesn't have a british passport, another pre-requisite of getting someone to countersign.

though that, can not get one of your mates to sign, anyone who has known you for two years, by default they've known of your mum, even if they don't know her personally. They rarely ring and ask questions about the countersignature

It looks as though it's going to have to go that way, get a friend to do it. So much for trying to do things the "right" way, all goes belly up.

EDIT: Actually that won't work because none of them do a job on the accepted list.

I'm starting to get really upset about this now :(

I did the premium passport thing you know where you go to have the passport done in 1 day it wasn't hugely expensive and I don't think it required this counter signature since the person there can see who you are so no need for sworn likeness.

EDIT see it's only for renewals...sorry :(

I also found the passport office extremely helpful when I phone them.

They have to be on the recognised job list OR be a person of good standing in their community.

wtf, seriously its easier to get illegal drugs apparently than it is to get a passport, can you not get anyone ANYONE who is on the accepted list who you have spoken to, that can sign a piece of paper and give their passport number

I fail to see why she can't use the doctor or the bank, it's not hard everyone uses these services even if they don't actually know you, they just charge a fee for signing your application
