Passport question...

How about if the card contains a photo and a chip, and all the chip does is to connect to a centrally held database so a reader can show driving license status, passport status etc. Kind of similar to putting a debit card in an atm and showing your bank account details.

All first time adult passports require an interview now. Not sure about renewals or whatnot, but you'll be sent a letter once your application has been processed presuming all details and photos are fine :)
When i got my new passport forms it said some people may be required to have an interview, not everyone.

Edit: Just looked at the site, it would appear you only need to go for one if you have never had a passport before. Don't need to go if you are going from a child to adult one as in my case. (you can have a child passport until you turn 20 it would seem but mine expires 2 weeks before my 20th birthday anyway).

Now that makes sense! Thought it sounded weird!

As a Passport Examiner with IPS, I can tell you that the DVLA has access to our database via a secure link called OmniBase. When you provide your passport number, they perform a search via this link and copy the photo etc. However, IPS (as far as I am aware) do not have access to the DVLA database.

Yes, this is true, if you apply for a passport at the age of 15, you will be given a child's passport which is valid for five years.

In your OP, the last para is confusing. Are you meaning sending out a copy passport, or replacement. Or do you mean this to be your first application, if so... how would they have the details already?

how could he have given his passport number for driving licence etc if it was his first passport.

I supose considering your driver's licence is for 10 years they want to make sure your info is upto date.

Passports give access to other countries thus the checks required are stricter (international agreements etc.) I know it's a pain but I'm glad such checks are made, too many people trying to enter the country illegally is probably to blame.

Are you sure it's not older? I got my first 10 year passport just before I turned 22, which means I got a 5 year one around the same time I applied for my drivers licence at 16.

As far as I was aware, 18 is the changeover point. I have a 10 year one now, and I got it when I was 20, my child one ran out when I was 18...but that may have been coincidence.

Nope, its definately 16 - look here: http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-first.asp

If you were still 15 when the passport application was received, and also by the time it came to issue the passport, you would be given a child's one. However, if you turned 16 whilst the application was with IPS, and before the examiner had a chance to issue the passport, you would automatically be given an adult one (and thus have to pay the difference etc).

if you apply and receive it before you turn 16 you get a child passport that runs out at 20, if your 15 and going to be 16 before you receive it you apply for a 10 year adult one.

If you get a child's passport at the age of 15, you can still use that passport for the full five years. It doesn't invalidate once you turn 16.

Markyp,

What is only possible with digital passports?

Using it to prove who you are on your driving license.

You don't actually have to send photos off for a driving license anymore guys! You can just give them your passport number (if digital) and they get all the data from that. :)

Indeed, thats what I did with my provisional.

Please explain.

Passport form requires:
Name
Address
Date of Birth
Place of birth
Phone number
A photo and a person to sign it.

Which coincidentally are the same things a driving licence requires (though possibly not the place of birth).

If we were to fill out a single form, why could we not just request a driving license etc from the information we have already given the government?
The difference is that whilst I could know your name, address, DOB, POB, and phone number, chances are I don't know your passport numbers ;)
