Passport question!

Hey all, I am flying to Ireland for a short break with my GF in June. However, my passport runs out in July, and I have heard that you need to have so many months left in advance. Although, I have also heard that as long as its in date it doesn't matter. Either that or I could use photo I.D. such as a driving licence to enter the country. Anyone know the score???

You don't need a passport for Ireland.

You need a passport to fly anywhere now. Internal included. So Ireland is a definite.

Check with your airline.

Well internals may let you on with photo I.D but some don't like driving licenses so a passport is the only way.

A number of countries like you to have a minimum of 6 months remaining on your passport, I'm not sure on the rules for Ireland but if you're likely to be using a passport again in the foreseeable future (next five years or so) then why not just apply for a new one now? IPS can add on up to nine months onto a renewal application (source) so to avoid any potential problems it seems worth doing.

you can visit ireland without a passport.

However you should read on what photographic id is acceptable to your airline.

Since you can get to Northern Ireland without ID and since there are no official borders anymore why would you need a passport.

Because you're leaving the UK as the Republic of Ireland is not the same country. You will need a passport, and not just photo-ID.

But isn't that's the point of the immigration check?

Besides, do you really want to risk it? I got my passport back in 10 days, he has over a month to get it renewed so i don't see why anyone would take the risk.

You can go from liverpool to belfast and drive down it's all the same you don't need a passport to go from liverpool to belfast and you certainly don't need one to drive down to Dublin.

My wife lives near the border do you think she wips out her passport to go across the border shopping.

You do NOT need a passport to go from UK to Ireland or vice versa.

I flew to Dublin in December and i NEEDED a passport to fly, Checked before hand and the airline confirmed i needed one.

Oddly enough I'm off to Ireland in June and my passport was close to running out also I'm going with my girlfriend

I took mine to the post office and with the check and send service they will check your forms and photos are ok and it will be returned within 2 weeks. You just need to get someone with a passport to fill in one part of the form and sign a photo. Do that first

So if your worried get you butt to the post office asap. They will also add any remaining time to your passport I think. About 5 years ago my mate went to Ireland on his driving license and wasnt even stopped but things i guess have changed now.
