Hi

I have a folder that will be sending to a friend either via email or via usb stick.

I want to password protect it and maybe even encrypt it.

Are there any good free programs out there to stop wandering eyes if the file is lost.

Cheers

Can one password a folder in windows vista without encrypting it? As mentioned elsewhere in this thread I killed my sisters PC so she is having to use mine for the moment. I dont want her seeing my private stuff.

Create a user account for just your sister, assuming she doesn't already have one, then use NTFS permissions to deny her account access to folders you don't want her looking at.

Any folders in your User folder will automatically be protected from other accounts.

The problem there is that its like virually admitting you have naughty things and secrets...My family are very old fasioned.

So what?

If it is your computer you have every right to keep your stuff private.

One of two things is going to happen if you password a folder.

1: Your sister isn't nosey and doesn't look at your stuff.
2: Your sister finds a folder she can't access and will assume you have naughty things and secrets.

Either way you have something to hide and no matter which method you use you run the risk of making it obvious.

If your sister is not very computer literate you could just hide the folders.

I do think the lack of passwordable folders is odd in an OS.

How about just keeping all your private stuff on a large USB stick? Can hide it when it's not in use. :p

Frankly I allways thought the ability to password folders in windows should have been a standard many years ago. So much is private on computers these days.

Most major OS's have a multi-user model. Most OS's let you assign permissions to files and folders for the different users. The ability is there, you're just afraid people are going to ask questions.

Truecrypt is your friend.

That way she won't even know you have said folder on the PC and unless she's got her own secrets she won't know what truecrypt does ;)

If you have winrar or 7zip on your system (the latter being free) why not rar or zip the file and add a password. This way you will both encrypt and password protect the info. You could then text the password to your friend. I would however point out that a lot of security suites do not like password protected email attachments.
