Password check

Some mobo's have a 'user' and a 'supervisor' password. The user pasword is needed if you want to boot the PC and the supervisor password is needed if you want to enter the bios setup. If the supervisor password is set and your friend doesn't have it then he will need to do a cmos reset as described earlier.

If it is just the case that he can't see how to get into setup then he will need to press a shortcut key during the early stages of booting. It is usually 'del' or one of the function keys (F2) but it does vary with different motherboards. Pressing the 'pause' key during the early stages of bootup may also enable him to read the on-screen information that may tell him which key to press. Hth.
