I'm after a password manager, such as Keepass or LastPass.

Has anyone used either of these or preferrably both? And could go over benefits/drawbacks?

I'm going to assume that Lastpass is only a viable option if I'm able to install the plugin on the computer I'm using?

I use lastpass and find it great. You can log in to the website and copy and paste them if you cant install the plugin.

I use Lastpass too, it's free but I pay for the app too ($12/year I think) and it's superb got it on ipad/nexus 7 and combined with the free desktop browser app it means I can rely on it.

Does worry me a bit having all my eggs in one encrypted basket though - no doubt about it!

Keepass is a very good alternative though, used it in the past. To be honest I only went to Lastpass due to the app.. but I haven't regretted it.

I've used both KeePass and LastPass.

KeePass wins, it's hard to beat KeePass + BitTorrent Sync, it's nice knowing that the database is safe, sitting on your devices instead of someone else's server (Everything is stored on my NAS and files are synced across my devices.) and most importantly, it's open source and cross platform, KeePass for Windows, KeePassX for OS X/Linux, MiniKeePass for iOS and KeePassDroid (I think) for Android.

LastPass isn't bad, but if you want to be able to use it on mobile devices, you have to pay for the premium service (which I did for a year, ended up going back to KeePass.), it's down to personal preference though, give them both a spin and see what you like.

You can also try Dashlane and Password Safe, there are plenty of options.

If/when I get a YubiKey, I'll probably go back to LastPass /w premium, but for now, KeePass is good enough.

Yeah the central server aspect of LastPass is a concern. I guess as you say the best idea is to try them both and see.

I use KeePass, awesome tool. Now I only know a handful of passwords, the rest of my passwords are crazy

Just to throw another name into the hat, I use 1Password to sync my passwords between PC/OSX/Laptop/Work PC and with IOS7 those passwords sync to my iPad as well. Great program and the companion app on the iPhone means I always have them with me.

If you have a little money to spend its worth taking a look at 1Password. I haven't used the other two so can't compare but at least it may help you make an informed decision.

Lastpass here. Being using it for the last year or so. Just works. The same concers for the lastpass database can easily be handed over to KeePass. Disk failure / loss of device / theft all render your more random passwords pointless.....

Why are people still stressing over Lastpass uploading to their servers? All data is encrypted on your machine locally first and it's at this point only in which it is transferred to their servers in the encrypted format using AES-256 encryption.

Hell Steve Gibson gives it the seal of approval! (skip to 50 minutes in to listen/watch the Lastpass section)

KeePass is my weapon of choice. The database is synced between devices using Dropbox. Key file is enabled.

Just recently switched over using Lastpass tied in with two Yubikeys. Never heard of them prior to a colleague showing me and now I'm hooked. Very convenient and works with both Lastpass as well as Keepass.

Got a free premium account for Lastpass but only lasts for a year so after that I'll dump it out into Keepass.

The Yubikeys are a must though :)

Might have to checkout keepass.

Currently running with 1password on the mac. But moving over to the new rig soon and hate the idea of passwords being saved on some random server. I'll manage my own stuff thank you.
