hi guys,
so my friend come to me and asked if i can sort his laptop as it has lots of virus etc and is slow!
i said yes no probs
he brings it to me and it has no opitical drive as it was taken out for some reason or another, but he did bring an external drive.
so firstly i wiped the hdd then put in the disk to external drive only to find it wouldnt boot.
so i went into bios to see if i could change boot sequence only to find the bios has password, i foned my mate he said "errr hmmm i didnt know it had password"
laptop is a sony vaio PCG-GRT896HP
is there a way to remove the bios password and can i install windows with external drive?

hmmm sounds promising will give it ago and report back.
now saying i do remove password is it posible to boot from external drive or usb?

depends if the bios will boot from usb, if not id be inclined to take the hd out and put in another laptop with cd rom and install it that way. Or get a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor and bung it in your desktop pc (if you have one)

Not saying thats the best way, but its a way.

i did install OP by putting into my laptop which also is a sony viao but when putting back to his laptop it didnt want to play ball.

I think your going to need to get in touch with sony.
Had a similar thing with a dell at work, they then asked me to fax proof of ownership and such to them.

Modern laptops are a lot more secure in the way the bios password is protected these days.

I take it if you just flashed the bios you'd still be in the same posistion?

found this link, should be of some use. clicky

the passwords are not stored in the bios but on a eeprom no amount of flashing or battery removing will solve it, only solution is to contact sony, if removing them was public knowledge it would be pointless having them.
