Is there a way to do this natively or with an app?

I'm trying to password protect a file to stop it from opening without entering either the system password, or a password of my choice.

Thanks

You could always just .rar (or otherwise compress) the said file and password protect the archive? That means that not only is it password protected to open, but the contents are encrypted until you do so. Win?

I think this question is overdue for a clarification...
are you talking about

  • a mac
  • an iPad

in that mac's don't have apps and iPads don't have files

Mac's do have apps since the recently released Mac App Store :)

I have a vague memory of a way to password protect a folder by converting it to a .dmg file which you can only open with password. I can't for the life of me remember how I did it though but will try and dig it out.
