I have been trawling the internet for about an hour trying to find the answer to this question so I'm hoping someone here can help me.
Im trying to password protect a samba share and am currently doing this by disallowing access to "everybody" and allowing read access to specific users. However when I try to access the share from a windows box I cant see it in the list of shares available on the machine and navigating to it directly e.g. \\servername\hiddensharename just informs me that I don't have permissions on the file and doesn't give me the option to log in.
The only way I have managed to access the share on a windows box is to map a drive and specify the logon credentials from the map shared drive dialog
Is there any way for the server to "advertise" the hidden shares and is there a way to get windows to prompt you for a password rather than having to map the drive every time I want to access the folder
Cheers!
