Patio - how to get that "Mediterranean" look?

I want to try and get a bit of a "Mediterranean terrace" look for my patio, and wondered if I could get some suggestions.

The patio area is almost a courtyard:

The orange area is the patio.

Bottom is the house.

Right side is a door to a small shed, plus a door from the passageway between houses, the black block at the top right is another shed. (The blue lines show the doors). These walls are about 2.25m high.

On the left there's a low wall (about 1.75m) for about half the length of the patio, and then a lower fence (about 1m) for the rest of the length of the garden.

The 2 brown blocks are flower beds - currently at ground level, and the green is the lawn.

So, my ideas are as follows:

Pergola over the square area between the back door of the house, the door from the passageway and the shed, with vines.

Replace the current block paving with some nice terracotta coloured tiles (with contrasting white grout - http://www.pavingsuperstore.co.uk/b...ta-square-tile-single-size-options-2938-p.asp)

Raise the flower beds, and plant with mediterranean herbs, e.g. sage, rosemary, basil, oregano, etc. A few big plant pots along the edge of this too.

The doors to the sheds and passageway would be painted a nice strong blue.

Now, the bit I'm stuck with:

All of the walls are currently bare brick, which doesn't really fit - ideally I'd like to have these smooth rendered/stuccoed and painted white - I'd also like the raised beds to be matched in this smooth white finish, and potentially extend the existing wall on the left to the end of the patio, and top with terracotta tiles.

I'm not sure if it would make more sense to have the whole rear of the house (or in fact the whole thing) rendered, or just up to the same height as the other walls and leave the top section brick?

Also, from the bit of research i've done, it appears to be fletton brick, which has some issues with painting?

If painting rendering the brickwork isn't an option, what alternatives do I have? Cover the whole wall with trellis and try to get some vines or so growing up it?

White walls:( will soon become gruby.
Oh the fun of painting fletton bricks, won't last long before it peels, etc..:D

I'll get a picture of mine tomorrow as its similar layout but with a longer grass / bed area.

My house is painted white (not yellowed yet but I expect to repaint it regularly). On the right is a seperate garage with a pergola type thing attached. This acts as a frame for a grape vine and another unidentified climber. I may well be adding a climbing rose to it this summer.

Left hand is 6' fencing with wooden trellis. Lots of climbers like honeysuckle and ivy. I'll be cutting this back this year as its out of control. There is a bed between the patio and lawn where I'll be adding an olive tree and a palm this summer.

The garden faces south west so the patio gets an awful lot of sun. Fortunately there is an huge Acer and a Ceanothus providing a lot of shade and a magnolia and a cherry for colour. Unfortunately the ceanothus needs to come out to make way for a trampoline and the cherry because its ugly for 50 weeks of the year.

The lawn is actually longer than that - but I didn't bother putting it in as I was just showing the patio area =)

Would be handy to see how yours looks though, unfortunately ours is West facing, so we get a bit of sun (enough to make it nice to sit out on the patio, but not a huge amount :()

I actually need to figure out how to get more shade. The vine doesn't give much shade until the afternoon as the garage wall is a sun trap until about 2 pm so it's a bit pointless really. Looks nice though.

Just been through my phone and photobucket and there aren't any suitable pictures there. Will try to take some tomorrow.

That would be great, thanks :)

I said West facing - but it's more like North-west, so we should get some evening sun in the summer, but like I said, not a huge amount :(

Yeah, that's what I was potentially thinking, but then like I said, do I do just up to the height of the other walls, the whole rear of the house, or the whole house? Not sure if it would look weird to just have part of it done! :p

any chance you could post some pics to give a better idea of how it looks out there ?

Hopefully this works... few pics from this afternoon here:

Also, with regards those massive drain holes, do they need to be that big, or can they be partly covered? (With something removable obviously :p)

It that size so if you had a tap fitted it would run into the gully.
I made up a cover from a piece of aluminum checker plate I had to cover mine, & two brackets attached to it, which I screwed to the wall, as the surround wasn't that thick, & there was a risk of breaking it.
slightly overkill, but it stopped my two year from exploring the drain & putting his down it.

You could remove some of cement slope & surround & get some matching patio blocks to fill in.

A bit surprise that they didn't install a gully where your tap is now located.
