Paula Radcliffe

What another bashing thread by someone who knows bugger all. I'd like to see you run a marathon, injured, in an elite field.

Im just sad that she has taken up the space that some other brit could have run in.

Excuse?? have you OP ever run a marathon or are you just some armchair critic, its hard enough to do it in under 4hrs let alone elite standards, I suggest you shut up!

anyway Radcliffe is a legend, although missing out on olympic greatness, she was top class and its sad to see her last chance at an Olympic medal be missed due to injury, considering in the 90s she was told she would never run again due to some degenerative oesteo disese, shes done pretty well to be a world record holder

Shes done brilliantly, no one can dispute that. Unfortunately she has never been an Olympian. Saying that the whole of team GB are struggling at the moment. Thank goodness we got a silver today or I think the press would have had a field day with them.

For some reason the home Olympics seems to be having a negative effect at present. Many competitors are actually blaming the enthusiastic spectators for their failures to perform to their potential.

Too much more of this kind of tweeting will cause a huge backlash from the press and public. The UK has spent a fortune bringing the games to London and spectators a small fortune in tickets. I am very concerned about the home advantage crowds being put into a negative light.

Her record in championships was dire, contrast that to events where she got paid.

As for her being a legend, she doesn't even come close to the likes of Redgrave and Hoy.

Well, she's still world record holder I think so her ability is beyond question. Her temperament however is. Injury is one thing but this woman has "broken down" physically and mentally so many times.

Fantastic athlete yes. Legend? No.

Utter rubbish being spouted from a few in here and on the BBC page as well.

She is our best female athlete for yonks, perhaps along with Kelly Holmes, Denise Lewis and perhaps Eness if she can pull it out the bag this weekend. No olympic medal maybe, but her marathon record is outstanding apart from that and she holds a world record..

Absolutely.

At her peak she was one of the greatest marathon runners ever. Unfortunately injuries stopped her winning an olympic medal, which is the thing which sticks in the public perception, and which the press still bang on about.

She still holds the world record for the marathon at 2hrs 15min 25sec which is a simply incredible time.

A few people have raised a valid point - she should have switched to marathon earlier. Seemed like she was in peak condition at the Sydney games but just never had the finish over 10k so was always gonna be the bridesmaid without a medal.
