Pausing with your ISP

Does anyone know if this is possible? I have a period of 4 months coming up between rents when I will be travelling and don't want to cancel as im on a 2 year contract and cant keep it going as another tenant will be in the house. does anyone know if you can just carry on to pay without it being live anywhere? thanks!

They will want to charge you the remainder of your contract. IE Cancel.

I doubt they would allow it but it doesn't seem like they lose anything from it.

Your still be paying them but they don't have to provide a service, so pretty much win win for them till you get back.

Maybe phone them up and ask?

I doubt it, you're committed to a contract for 24 months. It's not their problem you will be away for 2 months, otherwise any customers being provided a service could 'pause' their billing.

It would cause companies to be inundated with requests similar and take up too much time. What's in it from their perspective, other than reducing their cash flow?

This. If you've been with them a while they may discount that final amount (O2 Broadband did for me because I'd been with them a few years) but they'll have to terminate the service at the address so I don't see how they can continue billing for it.

If you're moving out then they will have to cease the service on the line otherwise the person moving in won't be able to place an order. So they will charge you for that.

Well it's just the same that you can't 'pause' your mobile phone, gas, electric, council tax etc.

Yeah. Destroy your modem or just unplug it and hide it.

Last time I used xDSL (over 6 years ago mind) you needed to enter a password provided by your ISP into the router.

If you have Virgin line it won't connect unless you have the modem Virgin media assigned to you, so you can just unplug and hide it.

Actually you can pause mobile phone contracts if your going to be out of the country for a while, think the max is 90 days for some networks.

He doesn't want to stop the contract, he wants to stop service availability for 4 months because he doesn't want to let the tenant use his internet connection. Unplugging the modem stops the internet but lets OP continue his contractual payments.

The OP is in contract.
He doesn't want to stop the contract, he wants to stop services for 2 months.

Because he has already said there are new tenants moving in, he can't keep the line active on the property as the new lot will move in and want to get their own BB/Phone, they will have to terminate the service at the property and I would be surprised if there system allowed to bill someone without any billable service (although energy companies seem to manage it..)

They're not going to take out a new contract and nowhere has the OP said that they will.

What kind of tenant rents for 4 months at a time and signs up for new 12 month minimum Broadband contracts for every move?

If they're renting it for 4 months chances are they have internet provisions in place by way of Mobile phone with 3G/4G internet.

All OP wants to do is stop random people from using his connection while he's away for 4 months. Heck that tenant might not even be there for the whole 4 months that the OP is away, he could just be there a month for all we know.

So your telling him to keep the connection in a house he no longer rents?

Yeh I'm sure the new tenants will be happy if they decide to get a landline to find its already got a connection by someone who is travelling :confused:

Why do you keep assuming the new temporary tenants want a new telephone and/or broadband package? You're complicating it for the OP. He's only gone for 4 months. These random tenants will be there for less than 4 months and chances are they're not going to tie themselves into a 12 month (at minimum) contract. They're there to live for under 4 months, the last thing they want to do is give the OP 8 months of free internet after they've left.

and when they decide to take out BB/phone? You're assuming they won't. Also he hasn't said if he's going to be renting the same place or not.

When they move out they will get the BB/phone moved to their new rented place... like most people do.

I AM PROPOSING TO CARRY ON PAYING.

I just have nowhere to put the service for 3 months. Then on month 4 I will actually put the service somewhere

No.. we are saying you cannot leave a phone line in your name at a place you no longer live as the NEW tennants will probably have it cancelled/disconnected anyway when they want a phone line. I think people are assuming you are leaving for 4 months then coming back to the same property and meanwhile someone will rent it for 4 months.

From my understanding you are leaving the property now, travelling for 4 months then returning and renting somewhere else? and you want to keep paying monthly for the BB and move it to where ever you decide to rent when you return.. to avoid having to pay off the remainder of the contract and then having to start a new one at the new rented place.

If that is the case i doubt very much you can.

that is exactly it and you are right they wont let you. but I think its unreasonable. according t plusnet they used to allow this, but oddly not Ofcom have banned it
