Payment Gateways

Ok, so we all know (don't we?) that Sage Pay is the best payment service provider, and the best option for when the site is on shared hosting...

Having never done a payment gateway, what are the main advantages/disadvantages to having your own payment system on your own server?

My main interest/concern is keeping everything in keeping with the site, so people aren't vividly aware they have been redirected to another site...

something like the ocuk payment system? with the nice ajax interface... is this possible while using something like sage pay?

Sage Pay is excellent, you can style the payment pages on their server to pretty much whatever you need so it will still be seamless.

Storing credit card details on your own server is a minefield of legalese. You have to have SSL setup and whole bunch of other stuff which make it a nightmare.

Trust me, Sage Pay is the way forward

so even using the basic "form" based integration of sage pay on shared hosting, we can still control a lot of the styling?

I can't remember off-hand the level of service we use, but it'd be worth rining up the technical guys at Sage pay - they know their stuff and will talk you through what you can and can't do.

If you're interested, I have an excellent series of video cast showing how to integrate a site with Paypal (the standard version). Really helped me in the past.

Is that a custom integration? And not using website payments? or payflow?

Can't remember where I found them, all I have is a 200 odd MB zip with a series of 10 videos and projects files. I may be on later so I'll upload to my web space and give you the link

It's using website payments standard with IPN and shows you how to send the cart contents over to the paypal site. Covers using the paypal sanbox environment too
