Hi,

Have just sold an iphone via ebay for £360. Payer has paid instantly via paypal and my paypal account has a balance of £360 - all good.

However, as the seller only has 5 feedback, has paid by credit card and has an unverifed account I'd wanted to transfer the money to my current account before posting - as £360 is a lot of money.

Paypal won't let me do this and are holding the transaction until the 15 May. I haven't used ebay for yonks and have only previously sold one item.

Does anyone know what happens here now, as I'm a bit stuck. If i wait the 3 weeks, will the funds be available to transfer or are paypal expecting me to post out a £360 item without the money being in my current account?

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Unverified account = dont post it no matter what.

Id be VERY suprised if its not a stolen credit card or a stolen account.

Iphones are like honey to scammers... easily resellable.

You will post it and then in a few days paypal will reverse the transaction as "unauthorised" and you will have lost your phone and have no money. As the account was unverified you have no protection as far as i know.

Just do nothing and wait for the chargeback to happen then apply for your listing fee back and relist.

paypal expect people to send stuff before you even have the money. Its a totally stupid system now and makes selling a nightmare.

Don't post for god sake, your asking for trouble.

Think ebay/paypal holds the money until buyer leaves feedback.

I'd take control of the situation here and issue a refund with the reason that the account is unverified. That means you don't have to faff about with them forcing a chargeback.

When you relist it, make sure you state that you will not ship to an unverified address. Simples.

Just out of interest was this a 3g or 3gs? I'm still considering flogging my Desire and getting a 3gs (obv depending on how much a 3gs goes for on the dirty bay)

Sorry for the OT!

It's an iphone 16gb 3gs.

Just found this on paypal's site: https://www.paypal-marketing.co.uk/safetyadvice/PaymentHoldsForEbayItems.htm

I'm confused, will Paypal automatically release the balance after 21 days no matter what, or does the buyer have to leave feedback first (E.g. i have to have posted the item) before I can do anything with the funds?

Paypal really does suck for selling items like this :(

EDIT: just read yet another 'gotcha' on one of paypal's emails:

You'll be able to access your money after 21 days, providing your buyer hasn't reported any problems.

Paypal really have got me by the balls at the mo

It's very clear, the cash will be released either after 21 days or when the buyer leaves positive feedback, whichever comes first.

DO NOT SHIP TO AN UNVERIFIED ADDRESS. No excuses for shouting, DO NOT DO IT! If you do, you lose your seller protection and if it's dodgy then you lose, big time.

An iPhone? DON'T SEND IT.

Put it back up and either say you'll only send to verified addresses only, or better still, don't list Paypal as a payment option.

I ended up selling my iPhone to CEX, got about £60 less than you've been offered on fleabay, with more security and no fees at the end of the day.

Very true, but totally useless to me unfortunately.

Experience is a wonderful thing.

Sorry to intrude on your thread but the same thing has just happened to me. I sold two items this morning one for £240 and the other £147 and now paypal says i need to wait 21 days for both payments to go through. Does this mean they both have unverified addreses ? The buyer of the £240 item has emailed me asking to post it to a different address from his ebay account, do you think this is dodgy? Also how do i reverse the transaction via paypal or is this not possible?

Cheers!!

Do not, and I repeat DO NOT post it to an alternate address whatever you do!

Can you tell that an account is unverified? I'd expect eBay to put something in place to be able to ensure accounts and addresses are genuine....i don't really know how but without something like that, there must be millions of people worldwide stuck in this situation all the time.

Anyway, i'd definitely keep hold of the phone. There's so many iPhones up on there and the turnaround is so fast, you'll get a genuine well-rated buyer soon enough once you re-post the item.

Can you not ask the buyer to verify their address before you send? Also contact Ebay customer services they are very good.
On a side note we bought an iphone on Ebay that turned out to be a crappy chinese clone thing; Ebay (Not Paypal, even though we paid through Paypal.) issued us a full refund.
All the best with it anyhows.

*Edit. I would definately contact the buyer and then Ebay; also have you checked what their feedback is for? Whether they have bought or sold any other items of relative value?

If you refund them 1p I've heard the money becomes available instantly.

An alternative method would be to do that, transfer the money to your bank account, post it out using recorded delivery, unlink your paypal account from your ebay account and make sure your paypal account is unlinked to your bank account, just to be sure.

Reason I'm saying this is because I've sold a phone on ebay, got a similar amount, they were unverified and my money was held, it worked out all find in the end though.
