Paypal Issue

Basically what has happened is that paypal has taken money out the wrong account that belongs to my gf. A transaction went through 2 days previous on the correct account and 3 days after on the correct account but for some reason that transaction in the middle has came out of an account that she had no money in at the time. She only realised that this had happened when she read through her statement the arrived the other day.

Santander aren't doing anything for her because they say she has to get paypal to admit to the mistake and pay any fees that have occurred. And paypal are quite bluntly saying that its not their fault.

I have also had this issue with paypal but fortunately i have had enough in the account to cover the purchase. Im wondering if anyone here has also had this happen and how did they go about getting it resolved, because what essentially was a £20 purchase is now going to cost over £200 if paypal dont take any responsibility.

Thanks in advance

Looking online this seems to have happened quite a bit, but I can't seem to see how anyone has managed to get it resolved.

Well it Santander charging 35 for a transaction that goes into an unauthorised overdraft including unpaid fee of 25 and charging 5 per day for use of overdraft. It doesn't take long for it to add up. considering it's an account that isn't active and just hasn't gotten around to being closed and all direct debits and money in has all been changed, it's not as if she has been checking the few quid she had in it daily. I just want to know what can be done on her end to ensure that she isn't out of pocket for something that seems to be a common glitch with PayPal.

Paypal aren't FSA regulated - they fall under the Luxembourg regulator.

Santander aren't at fault.

However ask Santander about a DD indemnity claim.

Not sure how this would help.

For Paypal to collect funds from the wrong account a DD must have existed on it at some point. If they then collected from that account when they should not have done, then it's their mistake.

If the DD indemnity claim goes through then that's Paypal being at fault and Santander should refund the charges.

Additionally I think banks refund charges in the event of a DD indemnity claim.

This is not general practice, it is possible I guess or that it would strengthen his case against the bank charges.

The problem here lies with the fact that the bank correctly applied a charge to the account as the account did go overdrawn. Who is responsible for paying these charges is down to the customer to chase or debate.

Maybe he'll get lucky.
