Hey guys,

Sorry for the dull question - quick one.

I just had £410 transferred to my account (sold a guitar amp) and the fee PayPal take is £15.

I knew they would take a bit but this seems more than I expected (stupid me, should have checked properly)

If I refund him, does he get all £410 back? I'm thinking of refunding and asking him to re-send via a bank transfer.

This is what is says on site:

Confusing Lingo from Paypal! As below:

When you issue a full refund, your original transaction fee is credited back to you minus a thirty cent processing fee. When issuing partial refunds, a portion of the fee is returned to you.

The last thing I want to do is refund him and he only gets £395 back. Then we will have both lost £15.

You've kind of answered your own question :p. He will get his money back. Get people to send you it as paypal gift/friends and family, whatever they're calling it these days, so there are no fees involved.

Argh, well he didn't send it like that :/

It's for an item I sold on Gumtree - if there are fees involved does that give him more security as the seller? If so, fair enough as there is no middle man with GumTree.

Yeah when its done that way you're both covered by their protection (for what its worth). If sent as a gift there is little to no recourse for either of you, so only do it with people you trust. For the sake of 15 quid this time it's probably not worth the hassle of doing refunds and giving payal money!

Are you posting it to the buyer, or is he/she collecting?

If fees are involved then he and you are both covered by PayPal should anything go wrong (within reason/their policies).

If you send money by PayPal 'gift' or friends and family then there is no protection whatsoever.

Case in point, I sent someone £50 in error and PayPal wouldn't help to reclaim it and the person I sent it to had no integrity and kept it.

Thank you very much - in that case I will leave it as it is as it gives the guy some security. He's being nice to trust me but i've just found him on Twitter and he plays in a band so I'm happy.

Once again, thanks for clarifying. I will be sending the amp to him.
