Hi guys,

Can anyone answer me this? I cannot find an answer on Paypal or through Google..

How do I know someone has sent me a gift? I've received an instant payment for an item I have sold on Gumtree. I told them to send it as a gift, through friends and family so that they can't so easily reverse the transaction.

But the screen shows this in the details part of it,

"Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have sent the item to your buyer. Complying with PayPal's Seller Protection and following the trading guidelines on our Security page helps to protect you from things like chargebacks."

To those who have received a gift payment, does it actually show it in any screen? or on the account overview? To me it looks like they chose the first option of sending an instant payment though I might be wrong.

Stop being cheap and pay the fees. Sending it as a gift still means **** if they chargeback the transaction with their bank.

At least that way you "might" be covered by seller protection.

What? It is about me sending the item I am selling without the worry of them reversing the charge once they receive it. What fees are you talking about? It wasn't sold on ebay.

It's not referred to as "Gift" anymore.

When sending money there are two options:

I'm paying for goods or services
I'm sending money to family or friends

This kind of deters people treating taxable commercial transactions as private money transfer or "Gift".

Asim, have you ever received a gift payment, or what is known as a payment from family or friends? Does the account overview show it differently than the 1st option you quote. Or does it just come up as instant payment and that's that? I don't mind paying any fees. I don't even care too much about the item I am selling which is relatively cheap, but because it is heavy I don't want to get screwed on the postage if he claims it back.

And thanks for the response.

I have several known gifts received and they don't mention anything about gift.

However I think the commercial transactions automatically include the addresses of one or both parties involved in the transaction. Last time I received a commercial payment was too long ago I cant find it in my history I'm afraid so I'm not sure for certain.

Using the Sending Money to Friends and Family method doesn't incur any fees unless they pay using a credit / debit card however you don't have any PayPal seller / buyer protection.

You shouldn't get screwed unless he has a good reason for his bank to reverse the transaction.
