Paypal Theft!

Oddly enough I had my paypal account hacked the other week. Someone made 2 payments for premium news group subs. The first I knew about it was someone calling me to check if I made any paypal purchases recently, which I said no as I havent used my paypal account for months.

They immediately reversed the transactions and refunded the amounts and I then unlinked my bank account from them but kept my credit card on there.

I still dont know how they managed to hack my account as I have hardly ever used it, my password was pretty damn strong using mixed upper and lower case with numbers, over 11 characters etc:confused:

utterly bizzare. at least PP called you, i had to pester them manually.

Maybe PP's login system is just criminally insecure?

@Aod

I'd be more worried about what it was that was purchased with those funds and which it might appear to the powers that be was purchased by you..............

How exactly do they manage to get money? I mean if someone has a decent password, hasn't clicked on any random phising emails and you're not selling anything at the moment.

ive not had ones like that from paypal but from ebay.

it was stating that my account was going to e suspended and that i needed to put in my details. the address look right ebay@billing.... or something like that. the email was perfect

so i clicked on the like opened up like it was ebay (didnt look at the address tho) put in my card details. 1 week later my card gets used online. got all that sorted

get the email again

emailed ebay and they said they had sent nothing.

they would have took your paypal balance because nothing would have come out your back so most people would not know untill the next time they used paypal or looked at the emails

it wasn't used to buy anything from eBay, it was a simple transfer of funds from my account to that account (well, i say that account, it was an email address. whether it has an account on the end of it or not, who knows?)

eBay are not the only place that accept PP are they? Heck half the folks on MM accept PP Gifts as payments for used kit. How can you be so sure it wasn't for some kind of purchase that you would not want to be associated with?

you left that a little open - did they ever refund that final £481.99?

Yeah, they did.. eventually. I did get a £20 quid fine from Halifax for trying to deduct funds from my account which I never had.. Which I couldn't get back.. better than £481.99 though!

that's very true, however transactions of that nature have little-to-no paper-trail associated with them, so it's unlikely that the repercussions would lead back to me, but even if they do, (assuming PP side in my favour) the victorious-dispute will count strongly in my favour.

Paypal are just thieves, no idea why anyone deals with them tbh

because at the moment there's no one who's better while also being as universally accepted. :(

That would Irk me greatly, but i do suppose that £20 in contrast to the £480 is a (reasonably) small price to pay.

I've just been done for $720!

The money has left my bank account but when I look it's already on the disputed transaction list as temporarily on hold. I've given them a call and they say they'll look into reversals. How likely is it that I've picked up a virus/keylogger giving them my info?

On that, full system scan with avast, enable realtime protection, scan with malwarebytes then change all sensitive passwords sound about right? (anyone)

Paypal said they caught the transactions and will be issuing a refund, hopefully they don't take too long!

Okay - Short update time:
Email from Paypal today saying:
"We've finished reviewing your unauthorised activity claim and you'll
receive a refund for the transaction amount. It may take up to five working
days for the funds to appear in your account.
"

The money is indeed back in my account.

however, my phone's seriously acting up so i'm having difficulty recieving the security-key messages.

<edit>
I got tired of waiting five minutes for the messages to come through, and when they finally arrive i get three and none of them work - i've paid the £3 and bought the physical security token.

What on earth are you doing with a balance sitting in your Paypal account? The few infrequent times I am unfortunate enough to deal with that company I don't leave a single penny sitting in there for more than 30 seconds.

Furthermore you should only have a credit card linked to the account with no direct debit set up with your bank, thus if ever a problem like this arises you can just call the CC company and have the money back hassle free.

Thanks, I set up the SMS key thing within seconds and feel much safer now. Incidentally I have used Paypal/Ebay for over 100 transactions and not once ever had a problem. However there is still always that risk, someone will try to do something from a transaction ages ago or will try to access my account now.

Cheers all for the secuirty update :)
