I wasn't sure whether this should go in the Games forum or if it should go in Hardware as I think it is to do with my PC specifications.

I am running the following:
Opteron 165 @ 2.7GHz
2GB of PC3200 RAM
nVidia 8800GTX
Audigy 2

Most games play fine, but UT3 is jerky even with the world and texture details turned down. I am playing at 1280x1024 even though my TFT's native resolution is 1680x1050 as I thought this would help, but it still jerks :(

I have all the latest drivers etc, so it isn't that.

Do you guys think it is my hardware?

GTX possibly CPU limited by the Opty at that res?

Not sure how cpu intensive UT3 is though.

Run 3DMark06 and post your GPU and CPU scores might give you and idea if your GPU is performing as it should.

i would hazard a guess at the RAM being the limiting factor and not being able to keep up...

keep an eye out on Members Market for some cheap RAM..

If you install a cpu/ram/gpu monitor you can see what is being maxed out thus enabling you to determine the limiting factor..

If you go into the sofware section and click on the first post "freeware ultilites" something like that and go to the System Information and Monitoring section you can download a free ware application that will show you the cpu/ram/gpu usage etc whilst running UT3..

good luck

On first look UT3 should be handled easily by your machine, the power in your gtx alone should rip through it, ue3 is np for such a graphics card, esp at the res you are on atm.

what motherboard have you got?

is it jerky only on big maps? or on small maps too? does it happen in other ue3 powered games?

has it happened ever since you installed ut3? did it happen with the demo (if you tried it)?

try a smaller resolution than 1280x1024 and see what happens, if you notice the jerkiness goes away.

it is known that ue3 hitches a little sometimes when moving into a new area that loads into memory, but this is usually with single player titles and should not affect the static 1 loaded map method in ut3.

I do have ut3 but haven't installed it yet, will do soon though :)

as xirokx said I'm thinking toward the ram, then again... it should be able to handle it, 2gb of 3200 is good stuff and plenty for the game, over the 1gb recommended.

check your machine is clean of viruses and spyware, check software running/start up stuff, check new things installed if anything might be slowing your system down. Make sure your case cooling is good and clean out any dust that might be blocking anywhere. Do everything you can to prevent system slowdown/disruption.

are you running xp or vista?

I have noticed it jerks a little when I am viewing the whole world (looking into the sky or into the distance)... but if I run around looking at the ground, there aren't much graphics to render.

I will check out this monitoring software to find out what the problem is. It might actually help if I closed programs like Firefox because I am working on an essay at the moment and have around 50 tabs open - the program is taking up over 350mb of RAM.

Which software would be good?
