PC boots using CMOS jumper, but the PWR header is useless

I'm attempting to help a friend solve an issue were his PC wouldn't boot. He'd already replaced his motherboard and CPU so we ended up with two of each.

He'd been unable to boot for quite a while but it was discovered that he'd been throwing his CMOS jumpers away. So I put one on his CMOS header in standard position, then moved it to the reset position, then back again and it booted up.

However shorting the PWR header didn't power it on at all. Kind of at a loss as to why it's behaving in this way, and I couldn't find anything with Google, so any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I just had an issue with a machine where it would not power on at all with the front case USB header plugged into the Motherboard.

Try building it outside the case with just the CPU, Heatsink & RAM in and then start adding more parts to it.

I'm sorry but why the hell would you throw the CMOS jumpers away?

Basically if you attempt to start the PC up without the jumper present it could potentially damage the board. It may be FUBAR'ed as a result.

And just when I thought I had heard it all................. lol rolf lol:D

I was building a PC with my mate once, around an i5 3570K. He had unboxed everything before I arrived. I asked him where the CPU was, and he handed me the HSF.

I said "no not the heatsink, the actual CPU" - he looked puzzled, so I said "the CPU would have been in the same box as the heatsink...?"

He then looked horrified.

He had thrown the box away with the CPU still inside.  :D
