i have got a dedicated gfx card but i installed the drivers off the disc i shall go update them now and see what happens. this crash occurs when im not doing anything on the pc maybe just listening to music and the one that happened just before was when i was running WoW

i have an asus eah5450 card and how do i disable the onboard in the bios? it works fine just firing it up from the pci gfx and then running stuff from that

go into the bios and look for a menu called "onboard devices configuration" or something very similar.

That will have your onboard gfx and audio in it, make sure onboard GPU is set to disabled.

ok i have just turned that off and whilst downloading my driver for gfx card it bsod'd again should i tke out gfx card and boot from the onboard to see if that is causing a problem?

ok but if it is the gfx card would i still get returns on it as my dad bought me it for xmas and it has only been in my machine a week and has been causing some idle bsod's for a qhile

my dad also said it could be a software issue is it worth putting w7 on instead of vista and then trying my gfx card?

ive never had any issues with graphics cards on xp.
but your latest driver may not be compatible with xp/vista.
im not sure win 7 will make a difference.

best bet is try using the onboard graphics see weather it freezez with the onboard running.
if it does its not your gpu.
i take it your using good thermal compound on your cpu, and northbridge chipset.
may be worth re aplying the thermal paste.

so your best bet is check and test the components it could be caused by

Yes, you could return the GFX card for an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) to wherever your dad bought it from and they will test it themselves or return it to the manufacturer for diagnostic.

To be honest Vista is a complete dog of and operating system and has untold compatability issues, most users tend to prefer XP or Win7. However I wouldnt bother spending money on Windows 7 until you have ruled out the possibilty of a defective GFX card (it does happen).

Remove the 5450 card and re-enable the onboard intel GPU and see if that makes any difference to your systems' stability and let us know.....

definate software conflicts.....if you do a fresh install of windows 7 and download and install the latest drivers for your hardware i guarentee your problems go away......:)

so ive got it going through my onboard grapgics but it wont go to the right resolution for my 1080p tv. i have a w7 disc already but its only a 32bit one and i have 4gb of ram
is this a problem?

its not a problem just means all of your ram wont show up....32bit can only use 4gb max and if your gfx has 1gb then it will only show up 3gb system ram... will be fine though.....save any stuff you want to keep, download any new drivers you need for windows 7 and reinstall it mate

The 32 bit Windows 7 will limit your system to only use 3Gb of RAM. It wont be a problem but will make 1Gb or your ram redundant!

With regards to the 1080 resolution of your TV it'll either be a driver issue with the onboard GPU or there are some incorrect settings.

If it were me I would shell out for a 64bit copy of windows 7, format your hard disk, clean install of win7 (64 bit) and download latest drivers for your 5450

ok looks like that is my next thing as my onboard can only put out 1280x1024 and my 40" screen looks wierd at this res. so if i was to put w7 on and get latest drivers for my card would i hopefully not get a bsod off the card? its been going fine since i took the card out so i supsect old drivers where preventing it from doing anything? would it also allow me to downgrade 64bit to 32bit?
