Hi there !

I'm building a pc for a friend. He wants it for multimedia purposes (web browsing, movies, studying), no high demanding games, so no need for a graphics card (at least now). He just wants a smooth and enjoyable experience while on the pc, and would like to keep it for a few years.

Here is a first attempt to select adequate components. Can I have any advice on these ? Any better value or better components or bad choices?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £185.99
1 x Asus VE228HR 22" Widescreen LED Multimedia Monitor - Black £139.99
1 x Corsair Force GT 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) £105.98
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00403) £79.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) HDD £74.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £65.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020047-UK) £49.99
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £32.99
1 x Microsoft Wireless Desktop 800 (2LF-00021) £24.98
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £19.99
Total : £900.22 (includes shipping : £24.45).

Thanks !

If he doesn't need it for heavy duty tasks like gaming, video editing etc, does he really need to spend £800-900? A decent laptop with an SSD will be just fine.

Of course this budget is a maximum. Indeed if he won't see the differences with better value components then I'm all for them. I actually advised him on a desktop because he won't move it around, just in his bedroom. Thus the desktop is much more comfortable !
