Hello forumites,

A friend of mine texted me earlier for advice on building a rig for his GF that would be used for animation purposes (for her Uni degree work) but as I've only ever built gaming rigs I'd like some opinions/advice please.

Many thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to reply :)

Thanks for the replies guys. She uses Autodesk 3D Studio Max & Photoshop, and the budget is £1000 - £1500.

Cheers again

She wants a new monitor aswell, and will be wanting a 24" good (non TN) panel I assume. Also are the 5850, SSD and 750w PSU really necessary? She wont be gaming and I run my rig's 5850 off of an Enermax 620w totally fine!

Hmmm I think I'm going to rule out an SSD to be honest as they're just not cost effective yet. Raiding two Samsung F3 1Tb's might be a better idea IMHO and I'm still not sold on the 5850 for this lol

Seriously though, cheers for helping (that goes to everyone else aswell) I really appreciate it :)

Looks quality given the reviews on OC's and other sites. I've braced them for the cost of a good non TN monitor already!

Thanks for that mothermachine. So a 4870/4890 would do for this build rather than a 5850? (given that DX11 won't be utilised I assume)

Duly noted. So I'm now thinking along a build of these lines:

i7 920 OEM + H50-1 cooler
Asus P6T SE
6GB 12800 Cas8 DDR3 (brand undecided)
Samsung F3 1Tb
ATI 4890
550w Modular PSU (brand undecided)
CM-690 v2 case
DVD drive (brand undecided)
Dell Ultrasharp 24" TFT

Look OK?

Cheers for all the help fellas :)

I emailed him last night and recommended this setup:

CPU: i7 920 OEM
CPU Cooler: Corsair H50-1*
Motherboard: Asus P6T SE
Ram: 6GB 12800 Cas8 DDR3 (Viper/Corsair/G.Skill)
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTS 250 1GB (cheapest brand)
Hard Drive: Samsung F3 1Tb
PSU: Antec Truepower 550w Modular
DVD drive: Sony AD-7240S-0B
Case: Coolermaster CM-690 v2 Dominator
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster F2380

*However, if the majority of advice is to shy away from overclocking then I'll recommend a cheaper aftermarket cooler (such as the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro v2)

Just out of interest are there any cheaper (but solid) 1366 motherboards you guys could recommend as I've told him that consensus was that overclocking probably wasn't wise given that it's coursework she'll be doing on it.

Thanks again

I can help them with the overclocking side of things and from what he's saying it'll probably end up being me who builds it lol

I'll probably go for the AC7 Pro v2 and OC the chip to 3.6 or so to be on the safe side as the last thing I want is for her to have any chew with it related to my tinkering.

That being said I've never had one problem with my C2D e6300 overclock, I've had at 3.2Ghz (@1.25v) for the last 3 years on the original Freezer 7 Pro.
