Hi folks,

So I bought a Hewlett Packard PC for my parents 4 years ago and to be honest, it has been a nightmare. The SSD exploded within 3 months, rubbish cheap quality, deliberately fiddly to take apart and it's latest trick is to corrupt Windows every few weeks.

They only want something they can watch Youtube, store photos and do generally light workloads on.

I only have experience speccing and building relatively high-end gaming PCs and just realised I have no idea what to build for them to do the bare minimum without cheaping out on components.

Any suggestions on either components or pre-built systems that dont come with 90% bloatware and garbage parts?

They already have a mechanical 1TB for files, but i'd probably want a new SSD for the OS, new case, motherboard, RAM (8GB i assume would be plenty), CPU & cooler, PSU. No monitor/keyboard/mouse required.

Many thanks in advance,

pb

Do they really need a PC? A tablet like an iPad (if they have iPhones the syncing would be ideal) does pretty much everything these days, connect a keyboard case and you’re sorted.

My in-laws both use iPads now after many years of owning cheap laptops / netbooks.

Look up the ASUS PN50 recently released. It’s a semi-barebones kit that just needs RAM and NVME adding. I’m sure that and it’s small form factor could be ideal.
