I was wondering if anyone of you wise men could shed some light on a small problem of mine.. i upgraded my own pc,so i decided to use all the old parts to build a pc for my brother.I installed everything into the case, but when i power on the pc,i can get past the bios screen, but then i get this message:

PXE-E61 : Media Test Failure,check cable
PXE-M0F : Exiting Intel Boot Agent

Disc Boot Failure.. insert system Disc and Press Enter.

I've double checked the cables, which are new.. and i've tried it with two different Hard drives.. with the same results.

I'd be grateful for any ideas or advice on how to solve this problem.

Dan

Whats in the BIOS? Can you boot from a DVD?

PXE is network booting, it doesnt find a network server with a boot image so goes to boot from whatever is next in the boot order in the BIOS.

EDIT: I'll explain more

PXE-E61 : Media Test Failure, check cable Not found a network connection, check if the network cable is plugged in
PXE-M0F : Exiting Intel Boot Agent Giving up on booting from the network

Basically you cna set a server to hold a boot image if you are setting up dozens of machines. It's a simple fix, go into the BIOS and change the boot order.

First thing I would look at is the boot order in the BIOS. PXE may be referring to the machine trying to boot from a source on the network (however I don't know much about this), if it is disable this in the BIOS and set boot order correctly. If it's not this I would boot from a Linux live CD to confirm whether the hardware is ok or not. If you have a cable/HDD/SATA fault then you will probably not see the disk in Linux either.

sounds like it cannot find the boot source on the network or hard drive, can you see the drives in the bios and are you using a drive with a os on?

It won't boot from the cdrom.. i've tried setting the boot order a few different ways, but still no joy.. but like i said,it doesn't seem to be detecting the Hdd,but it detects the cd drive?

No.. i've got no OS on the Hdd.. i formatted it.. but i've tried it with a different Hdd which as an OS on it,but get the same result.

You could try booting from USB. You can create a bootable Linux USB pen drive using UNetBootin.

I might be way off the mark but from experience (ages ago), is the hdd sata? if so u might wanna set the sata options in bios to ide chan 1 or something along those lines, like I said was about 4 or more years ago but I had same prob when I upgraded from ide to sata hdd in a pc and it wouldnt see it.

am sure someone can be more exact as to what setting (if indded it is a sata hdd)

ahhh you have them both on the same ide channel, could be the jumper on the back of the hdd, see if it is set as master and cd drive as slave/cable select

Id say check the jumpers on the hard drive and the CD drive then. Maybe try just the hard drive without the CD drive.

I changed the jumpers to the correct places, and now it detects my Hdd.I've set it to boot first from cd rom but when i insert the os installation disc i still get the disc boot failure message?.. maybe my cd drive is faulty.. i'll try it with a different one. thanks for the help so far :)
