PC Crashing

Hi everyone,

Had this problem for a while, tried a few solutions but none have cured it. It first started happening when I got Far Cry 3, but I have also had it happen when playing World of Tanks.

The problem is, when playing these games my PC will randomly crash, the screen goes black and there is a buzzing noise through either my speakers or my headset (whichever I am using).

I have removed all overclocks, lowered settings, turned fans up, disabled the AMD Audio driver and it still happens. Sometimes it will happen within 5 mins of playing, other times I can play for up to an hour. It's really getting annoying and I can't really progress in Far Cry 3 easily.

I did read that the motherboard could be the problem but I have no way to test that so I am wondering if there are any other solutions I can try before putting it down to the mobo.

Thanks in advance,
Cameron.

Spec:
i5 3570k
Gigabyte Windforce OC 7850
HX650
MSI Z77A-G43

For the mobo, Make sure its running the latest BIOs.
Make sure you're running the latest drivers for the 7850 too.
Did you install anything new (components) before this happened? Do anything significant you can think of?

I have to say had this problem since I got my pc from oc.. but going travelling 2 days after for a while just forgot ha. Once I get back I do need to look at why it's doing it very annoying.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the quick responses! When you say latest BIOs, you mean flashing a whole new version? And also, I am on the latest GPU Driver (13.4) but there is a 13.8 Beta out, should I try that?

Regarding the added components, I did add a BitFenix Recon fan controller and some BitFenix Alchemy LED Strips. Would these affect it?

I did look in the Event Viewer, there were some WMI errors that Microsoft say can be ignored and then the critical errors of the PC shutting down incorrectly. I can't see anything else but will keep looking.

Thanks,
Cam.

yes use the beta drivers, they offer best performance, using them on my 7850 just fine, did you set the power control slider to 20%?

was it crashing before you added in the led strips/fan controller? try disconnecting them and see if crashes continue?

I have only had crashes since I have had Far Cry 3 and the led strips/fan controller. I will try and disconnect them.

Just downloading the Beta drivers, have set slider to +20% and will test then. (First with the LED Strips/Fan Controller and if it still crashes then next without them)

Thanks again for your help, will get back to you after I have tested it.

Hey guys,

More info in post above.

Just had a quick few games on World of Tanks and it ran fine. Will test with Far Cry 3 tomorrow.

Thanks,
Cam.

Hey,

Just tested with Far Cry 3, played for about 20-30mins and crashed with vertical lines down screen. The sound continued as normal and then stopped. The fans on my graphics card sped up and I had to shut down with the power button.

In the event viewer there were a string of 9 errors occured followed by a warning.

All errors were of services stopping/terminating, here are the comments of some of the events:

The Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The Human Interface Device Access service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The Network Connections service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 100 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The Program Compatibility Assistant Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The WLAN AutoConfig service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

The warning was this:

Name resolution for the name www.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

Then there were the normal error and critical about the system being incorrectly shut down.... I will now do another test after disconnecting my fan controller and LED strips.

Sorry for the long post, I just thought I would provide as much info as possible.

Thanks,
Cam.

Hey guys,

After disconnecting the fan controller and LED Strips, I just successfully played for over 2 hours. Will play for longer tonight if I can.

As the Recon uses a molex, and so do the LED Strips, do you think that it can be an "overload" or borderline max load for the 12v line on my PSU? Do the molex and 6 pin use the same line? I am just trying to piece together what might cause the problem.... I hope it isn't this as a 650w PSU should be ample for my setup right?

Thanks,
Cam.

could be psu related

the 7850's don't use much juice but if the psu is old or degrading then maybe with the fan controller its affecting things idk

I got the PSU less than a year ago. It's a Corsair HX650. So a half decent power supply... Another thought that might be causing it is the internal USB connection for the Recon. I'm not sure wether it would affect it or not but I might try it.

Thanks for your help guys, will continue testing it.

Still running fine, no crashes since disabling un-needed audio drivers and disconnecting fan controller + LED Strips. I will be plugging the LED Strips and Fan controller back in sometime and retesting to see if the problem persists.

Sorry for such a late reply/update, been on holiday.

Right, sorry for late replies/old thread. However, I have had a few crashes while playing online with my mate. It's really annoying. Today it was black screen with grey lines and yesterday it was blue lined screen. Both with buzzing.

Really annoying, and I really want to get it fixed. I am still not using fan controller or LED strips so I am stumped.

Is there a way I can run something in background to monitor faults? Could it be something wrong with my PSU not providing enough power?

that with power control slider at 20%?

is the card overclocked at all?

you can look in event viewer to see any erros/crashes,they don't use much juice those cards, seemslike gpu crash or pc memory crash if its showing random coloured lines (gpu memory esp)

Power slider is at +20% and I removed all overclocks and took my factory OC'd card back to reference clocks.

No errors in Event Viewer except the ones for the unexpected shutdown...

Would Memtest be a good idea? and is there a way to test the GPU memory?

Thanks,
Cam.
