Right this is not easy to type as having to do it through my PS3.

I was on my PC last night, browsing this very web site when I got a pop up box saying, "one of your USB devices has stopped working" Then the computer frooze. I turned it off and did a reser and nothing. Some of my fans light up but nothing.

Then i saw some smoke coming from the back of my PSU (HYPER PSU)

I realise my psu is now dead, but whats the chance it HAS NOT damaged any other components ?

This psu is about 4-5 years old and I have never had a psu die on me before. I just pray to god nothing else has been damaged.

What do you guys think?

More expense!!

right just got a new psu and connected it. as soon as i turn the psu switch on, on the actual psu the pc starts. but NOTHING shown on screen. the computers HD activety light is constantly lit and on.

mobo is a as rock dual sata. i cant be doing with this at moment i have so much on and i need my pc.

please what should i do or check now?

Really need some advice here guys. Borrowe a friends laptop for the evening to keep me on line and see if we can get to the bottom of this. Otherwise. god knows. Already spent 55 pounds on a new PSU which hasn't cured it.

I have disconnected everything. No memory in, no cpu 'cooler' in, no gfx card nothing connected except mobo and cpu ( all optical and HD are disconnected) and as soon as I flick the psu switch the computer starts up (I can tell as fans come on) and that is without touching the power switch on the front of the computer. But have also tried resetting CMOS to no avail.

Have tried a AGP as well as my own PCI-E Graphics card and still nothing on screen. In fact my monitor (samsung) green light just flashes as though it's not getting a singlal.

Ok so it maybe the mobo. Could it have taken my CPU with it as well (opteron 146)

or do you think I should just 'somehow' from god knows where just get another mobo suitable for my memory and cpu and all SHOULD be ok (touch wood) ?

PS: is there any way of looking at the mobo and seeing the damage or wont it be visible damage ?

I will have to get the same sort of Mobo though as i need socket 939 for my opteron 146 and I have 2x1gb sticks of OCZ (i think) DDR200 3200 (I think!!) memory. No need to get rid of that.

OK, so taking into account my HD x2 should be ok, my gfx card is ok and my x2 optical drives are ok. If i get a new mobo/cpu and mobo

can someone spec me them then please as i have been out of the game of pc upgrades for quite some time.

I only use my pc for streaming mp3's, surfing net, and playing bf2 now and then.
Thats the main use of it really.

God I hope my HD's are ok.

Also, as present system is dead that means i cannot reinstall my new OS when i get all the bits on my present HD as I need to get the info off of the HD. So I will need to use one of my older HD 1st to install the OS (XP Pro) on, then get all the info from my 74GB raptor that presently has my OS and various other stuff on.

So if someone wouldnt mind spec'ing me a MOBO/ CPU and 2GB memory that would
be great as I really have no idea whats ok at the moment.

I will still use my PCI-E Gfx card though.

and would be good if i can still use my Artic Pro CPU cooler

Thanks guys. I am sure you all know what a head ache this can be.

right, tried everything and mobo is dead, tried my HD's in a external device on a laptop and all fine.

So no point taking a chance and just buying a mobo then finding out my cpu or memory is also dead so ordered this...

Will this be any noticable difference to my present (now dead) rig of a opteron 146 @2.5ghz, 1gb memory??>>

Hope so. God damn computers, £200 this has cost me for a god damn Hyper PSU blowing up and destroying my computer. Hyper should be liable for this!!!!

Thanks, just reading about being able to O/C that CPU. Been ages since i have OC so hopefully when this rig is up and running someone who has the same rig will be able to steer me in the right direction.

I am sure this will dome for a while anyhow. Just HATE being without a computer, strange how we become so attached to them. Mind you I think it is the data more than anything.
