PC dead?

my pc switched itself off this morning, tripped the breaker in the flat too

Tried another lead (must have blown the plug fuse) ...tripped the breaker again

Is it likely to be the PSU?

It's about 8 years old so could be anything I suppose

Very possible it's the PSU - could also be shorting.

Check that everything is secure in the case leads, cards etc - also check that the MB isn't moving around on the risers.

If all seems OK I would take the MB out the machine and run 1 stick, CPU/HS, and gfx via MB if possible or gfx card (depending on setup) and see what happens.

If it blows again - odds are that the PSU is at fault - the paperclip test should be an easy test if it is as the problem your experiencing isn't exactly subtle.

EDIT: Spec of PC and PSU? And be aware if you have a rubbish PSU you could risk damaging components if you keep on testing this way... The joys of troubleshooting - as it will be tripping for good reason...

Second EDIT: Also consider a different power outlet and that it's plugged directly into the wall and not an extension lead.

Thanks....can't find a paper clip but tried with solder and a piece of wire, neither were a great fit in the plug but pretty sure the psu is confirmed dead

Been doing a random beeping/siren noise for a while now, guess it was on its way out

Need to get one of those sata USB things now as need some things on the HDD tomorrow!

cheers, was an easy diagnosis in the end!

going to build a new pc eventually but was thinking of either getting a cheap psu now to get it working again, or a good psu that I can use in the next build

just now its an abit ip35 pro with 8800 GTS...the board has an 8 pin connector, do modern boards still use that?

ie is it possible to get a good quality psu that will work with the ip35 pro, but use it for a (probably) z270 board in a months time or something?

I would have thought a modern PSU would be fine - they still have the 8 pin 12v connector and the ip35 is 24 pin?

I would go with the latter as you'll be saving money - but I would do a pre sales query post in this forum just to be absolutely certain that 'any' modern PSU will work with the ip35.

cheers, I'm so out of touch with what plug is for what etc!

there's the 24 pin connector I did the paperclip test with, but there's also an 8 pin on the board, both hardwired to the psu, then there's the hdd/gfx connectors that are detachable

typical, got a ton of work to do next few weeks, otherwise I'd take time to build a nice pc, good things come to those who wait...etc!

Np - hope it works out for you.

May work out well for you as the Ryzen 5s get released in early April and that should be the sweetspot for the average user - plus BIOS and drivers updates will have, hopefully, ironed out most issues...

I have that same board (well not any more), yes it is a 24 pin ATX connector
I have used a variety of PSUs with it and if I used one that only had a 4 pin instead of an 8pin connector it still worked :)

will have to research ryzen5s, thanks plec

cheers Jim, missed all the next day delivery of the cheapies...so may as well get a decent one on Wednesday
