PC game for my Dad

I'm 39 and a dad with 2 teenage boys and i'm currently playing GRID, CSS, COD4, UT3 and Tracmania. TBH the fact he's your dad and he's older doesn't make a difference these days just buy him something you might like ;)

At the moment i would say GRID as it's new and a great game to.

1) Why not try the freeware versions of the old arcades classics like Pong, Space invaders, Lunar lander, Galaxxian and so on just to get him interested.

2) I wouldn't throw him in at the deep end in "big" serious games to start with.... Have to start off very slow ans very simple.

3) .... but maybe Wow trial as it involves very quickly and the training areas are trivially easy.

4) Dare I suggest Sims

5) Dungeon Keeper 2 if you can find a copy

6) Worms, Lemmings etc

7) Something like counterstrike or unreal tournament

The theme here is mostly jump in and play with nothing heavy to learn or think about to showcase some of what is possible with PC gaming.

I know a few m8s dads plays age of empires and flight sims, maybe get him something like that? Or what about fifa or something?

Alternatively, i picked up sim city 3000 in a bargain bin for £2 and have acctually been playing that more than source!

recommend the myst series of games (puzzle games, immersive, you need your brain in gear but well worth it), being a fan I would recommend starting with the first one but its old now and looks it lol RIP moul :(

I take it your Dad is my age 'ish.

Firstly I would recommend Original COD, He will take to the Era & the rate of fire the weapons put out will give him a nice progressive learning curve. The Outstanding Single player game will train him up & bring him on well.
Obviously after COD you can move him on to COD 2 as & when he is ready & if he takes to the 1st, Which he will :D

I would also recommend Medievil II Total wars, Completly different type of game with enough depth to draw him in. A bit marmite though but it will be cheap so worth a try.

I would also get him something like IL2 Sturmovich (sp??)

All the above games are as cheap as chips so well worth getting & getting him to try so at least we/you have an idea of what he will like.

All these games Obviously lead up to him getting BF2 :D:D:D Which is without doubt the best online gaming experience a man can have

Well BF2 i just found annoying at the start, just getting shot from where i had no idea but i must say it's growing on me. I'm getting a steering wheel after exams and im hoping i can make my dad start gaming - doubt its gonna happen though, he will have a 5 minute go realise how crap he is and blame it on the game saying it's "unrealistic" lol

HL2 is a good choice but if he hasn't played the first one then the storyline might be a bit confusing. You might need to explain the background story to it first of all, and even then I think you miss out on quite a bit if you've never played the first one, because the references don't mean anything.

CS:S would be good because he can play single-player against bots, even having bots on his team. Takes the pressure of him a bit, until he's got the whole hand/eye co-ordination thing mastered.

However, I think that the original CoD is the best idea, imo, because of the great single-player - it's an ideal introduction to playing FPS, and you can pick it up dirt cheap. Plus CoD2/UO and CoD4 for when he's had enough of the first one.

Alternatively.... what about a train simulator...?

COD1. should be a nice intro. or hl2? or if hes anything like most of the dads out there hed love a bit of lara :p

im a dad been playing for 20 years. i'd say arcadey driving games or simple shooters, for starters.

maybe something like darwinia later
