PC GAMES that do NOT suffer from Consolitis

I’ve played a few PC Games recently that just did not work properly, IMO. They don’t perform as well as they should on given hardware, they don’t look right, they don’t feel right, there's reduced savegame ability, underwhelming graphics, weird camera angles etc. etc. and after some research the answer always appears to be that they were developed for console and then ported to the PC (often poorly). Prototype, GTA4, now it looks like Operation Flashpoint 2 has been similarly spolied etc. etc. rant over for now.

However, other games that I know were developed for consoles do perform well on PC, such as COD4 and Psychonauts (but I know there must be more).

Which other games were ported to PC in such a way that they actually feel like PC Games?

I would really like to play some games that just work properly instead of wasting my time trying to solve problems with games that were badly ported. I appreciate that developing for multi-platform must be a very demanding job, but according to developers: 90% of the game code is shared between platforms, so porting would appear to come down to how much of the remaining 10% developers decide to port properly.

Basically I want to support the developers who did a good job of porting their games to PC. Or any games that were actually developed primarily for PC, if such things exist anymore.

Many strategy games are still either PC exclusive or have the PC as the primary development platform. The Total War series springs to mind.

What was wrong with the porting of prototype? No consolitis there, it just wasn't very good. It ran smoothly even on lower end hardware and played fine with keyboard and mouse.

Very low FPS on my 8800 GTX and then when I upgraded to a 4890 resolutions were artificially limited to lower than native, 1280 x max! plus lower textures etc were forced on. I finally got them to admit (after many many requests) that the game simply could not handle a graphics card with 2 gigs of VRAM, it caused it to force on all the lowest graphics settings. No patch either.

I actually enjoyed the game up to then, the graveyard and tentril devastators (in a highly populated area) were great fun, but I couldn't continue playing the game at horrible resolutions, it looked awful and still had bizarrely low FPS dips. Death by consolitis.

/me looks at FEAR 2

Have to say, I've had no problems with Prototype on PC with an 8800GTX and a GTX260 at lower or higher resolutions on the max detail possible.

I think the most infamous example of consolitis was Deus Ex 2: Invisible War.

If only the game was invisible.

I feel that all the source engined games feel like they're PC orientated, I would never play one on a console out of choice I don't think.

Stalker is a great example of a proper PC game. Not very accessible, but very deep and the graphics engine is pretty demanding.

Yup, Valve seem very loyal to the pc platform. Then we have other companies like infinity ward who started off mianly as 2015, they made their name on pc with moh:aa and cod1 then everything after that has been consolised up the wazoo.

CoD4, Oblivion/Fallout 3 (i know people winge about the UI, but for me, i tried Morrowind after Oblivion and it felt like a mess), Batman AA (Seriously), Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil 5 (I was surprised how good the game felt on the PC).

Batman AA played perfectly fine on the PC. No problems at all with it. Ran damn good on my rig. Also, Resi 5 plays just as good as any pc game... if you can get over the tank fiddly controls.

Yeah, I'll also have to add games that use the unreal engine in general, they also tend to be very classic PC style, though there is obviously differences depending on what direction the developers went in. Batman seems very good for this, agreed.

There are a good number of great games that were developed multiplatform (ie. need to run on consoles) that are brilliant on the PC (other than those already mentioned):

Mass Effect: Great game, took a while to come to the PC - but it just works. It looks great, not too demanding and the PC controls and PC specific optimisation make it the best version of the game. Expect mass effect 2 to be similar.

Far Cry 2: Works great on the PC.

Fallout 3: This game basically looks the same on the PC as on consoles. But even on most PCs the game looks great and plays brilliantly (with mouse control it can even be played as a straight FPS :)). Also, with the addition of thousands of mods and high res texture packs, it really comes into its own on the PC.

Call of Juarez: Looks fantastic on the PC. Turn up all the settings to max and it is actually a visual feast, I was rather impressed.

There are countless other recent "Multi platform" games that were similarly implemented on the PC, I just haven't got them yet. Hopefully even more will arrive in the future.

Agreed with the first three, I didn't play COJ though. :)

It's because they know that PC owners who want to play games will pay for hardware upgrades so they don't bother trying harder. It's a shame but thats how it is. Look at the effort they are making to make crysis work on the consoles. Going over and over very detail and texture till they get it right. That's the commitment that's needed.

It just makes more money the way they do it. Make a game for the consoles then to a cheap port to the PC that requires a PC 2x the on-paper specs of the console it came from. Cheap and you have 3 platforms to sell your game to.

Recently I'd say Resident Evil 5.

I think it's a port, but it's very clear the developers took their time to make it an enjoyable experience on the PC. Highly recommended.
