PC Gaming on a 3G connection.

It's all area dependant, hsdpa is fine for gaming, I've used it for mw2 on pc and xbox and had 3/5 bars.

At my own house it says I have a H (3.5g) connection but its terrible, at my friends apartment in the city center
It's perfectly fine for fps gaming.

Reviving an old thread to ask if people have any more recent experience with 3g gaming.

I live in the high peak and our BT internet struggles for stability at 1.1meg with maybe 2 or 3 server disconnections a night, pretty annoying if you're about to complete a heist in Payday 2.

My 3g phone on 3 is giving me 2-4meg and is great for streaming netflix, I've not noticed it drop at all, so I got to thinking it might be good for gaming. Has anyone tried it? Does it work? Would a dongle be better than a tethered phone?

Well I did 3g gaming when I moved houses and was waiting for my broadband... the experience was much better than I thought.

But the only way to know it is testing, because I have a friend that had to do the same as me, but his experience was a nightmare.

I did it for a bit as well, tethered to my iPhone when without the net for a while. Could just about play CSS but ping was generally 60-80ms which wasn't ideal.

Really depends on the area and only way to know is to try unfortunately.

I've played iRacing online with a 3G connection, so it can be done.

When I'm at work my 3G connection is faster than the works WiFi for download, upload and latency.

I've been using my phone to tether since last September and it's generally fine. Those that complain about latency issues with a sub 100 latency are talking rubbish. I'm no worse on 80ms with 3G than I was with 20ms broadband, it's subjective and down to each person and their reactions.

Haven't found bandwidth issues with any game yet ranging from FPS, RTS and MMORPGs...

You stated that people complaining about 100msec latency vs 20msec are talking rubbish and then admitted that it's subjective. Some (myself included) would notice the difference in an FPS game or the like.

The issue more with 3G is that sometimes you'll get far over 100msec latency.

I was living in a caravan for 3 months last year and played GW2 no problem :D
I asked the same question here and some said it couldn't be done, but it was fine. Even used to pvp as well.

It's subjective in that you may or may not notice the difference. I've played competitive FPS for years and found no hindrance when playing over 3G.

Yes, it's largely down to the location and is affected by a lot more variables than a standard broadband line which is one of the few downsides.
